Man I hate insomnia. But it gave me the chance to catch up on some stuff I'd wanted to do, so here's a look at the SNES action title Hagane: www.hardcoregaming101.net/hagane/hagane.htmI remember really liking this game when I first played it - but that's because I didn't get past the first level. Getting beyond that kinda shows how sloppily designed the game is, even though there's some cool levels, and lots of awesome movies and some neat looking bosses. It's a lot of lost potential, but it's far from a complete waste.

So here's the "fantastic" cult-classic everybody in the internats rave about. I'm glad you are giving it your characteristic down-to-earth, objective touch.
Its palette has an obvious "Genesis" flavor to it, doesn't it?

Hagane never interested that much when it came out. It seemed like another generic ninja-themed action game to me and there were plenty of them when it came out. Years later, I still think it looks a bit generic to me.

You only refer to the charging attack, you do know there are about four or five different attacks from the forward cartwheel thing, you're invincible during all of them

Never knew that, gotta give em a try.
You're technically invincible during the charging attack but then you backflip into position and more often than not, usually left me vulnerable for a cheap hit.

Nice to see this game on HG101. I haven't played it enough to either agree or disagree with the level design/difficulty criticisms, but I think the graphics are really great in this one. It's got a subdued palette, but there is a ton of detail in the sprites for example, and it has really great art design.

So I felt I was being a little bit unfair to Hagane, so I went back and gave it another shot. It still strikes me as poorly designed in some areas, but during the straightforward combat segments, it's actually a lot of fun. I think replaying the game and knowing how to deal with the obstacles make it more palatable too. I revised my review quite a bit to reflect this - I think overall it's a pretty good game, it's just lacking some crucial polish.
And those extra somersault moves are pretty useless, now that I figured how to do them. They're cool. but I just end up flinging myself into damage.

Third paragraph, misspelled word:
*Debatable* Third paragraph, informal tone. Nothing wrong with this, I simply feel that beginning the sentence with 'However,' flows better:
Fourth paragraph, misspelled word:
Sixth paragraph, misspelled word:
Seventh paragraph, misspelled words + two merged words:

"Maneuver" is one of those words that I can never ever ever spell properly. Same with "medival" (wrong) and "separate" (probably wrong). Didn't run the spell check on the second revision either.
Thanks again!

Yeah, I didn't have an instruction book when I played this game so it left me without knowing how to do the summersault through the air until midway through the game. I do agree somewhat on the cartwheel maneuvers, but a few of them, such as turning into a giant flaming wheel of death are more useful then others.

Heh... I have a couple of those, both starting with "o": "Occasion" and "occurrence." Sometimes, I even confuse those words in context! Anyway, a good article. I'll say that Hagane looks cool, but it hasn't held my interest enough to get to the end of the game just yet. Still, it's not at all a bad game, and it at least deserves more recognition.

Got the corrections too here, thanks yet again! For another note, "setpiece" as a compound word is valid here too, even if the dictionary/spellchecker bitches about it, like mine does, and I have to tell it to Ignore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setpiece

You're welcome, just glad to be of some service.
As for the compound word thing...indeed, my spellchecker says 'Aw, hell no', and I'm all like, 'Bitch, you sure?', so I check online and offline dictionaries to be positive. 'Framerate' (nor did 'setpiece') didn't show up in either and I questioned it myself because you just see it on every game site. But I've taken note of your prefence, so no problem at all.

Hagane was developed by CAProduction, which seems to have been started by ex-Technosoft staffers (game designer Osamu Tsujikawa and programmers Izumi Fukuda and Takashi Iwanaga worked on Herzog Zwei and Thunder Force III, among other things).

I think Hagane is awesome. I'm surprised it still gets overlooked today.
