Kurt, you did that one before you started outsourcing these titles to people who actually enjoy them, right?

I'm sorry but this topic is hilarious
I also rather enjoyed the article. I know I laughed.

Personally, as much as I like seeing the site get frequently updated, I prefer Kurt's articles much more than the others, and it makes me sad that the majority of the new stuff isn't by him (maybe all the recent stuff? I haven't really been keeping up). Why the other writers provide a lot of useful information, they lack the personality of Kurt's writing style, and thus come off as a bit dry and amateurish, like fans that are just writing about the games because they like them so much, not because they have a particular interest in the art of writing itself. Kurt's a pretty witty guy, and I love the little quips in his articles. They really bring the pieces to life and make them an enjoyable read, even if I couldn't care less about the game at hand. I don't think it shows that he can't describe them, but rather that he understands them well enough to poke fun at them.
Heh, this is turning into too much of a love-fest. But, seriously, if you're bothered by jokes like those, you'd hate my comments in my Getter Love!! guide on GameFAQs, and I love that dating sim. :P

Oh, I don't take any offense, I was just being flippant.
My issue with TokiMemo is way less of LOL JAPAN and more of my general dislike of life/dating sims - it's the same kind of reason I hate Animal Crossing, actually. The girls in TokiMemo aren't so much characters as much as a set of logical IF-THEN statements, with a bit of artwork and a voice actress associated with them. When these aspects are fleshed out, like in The Sims, or made a smaller part of a bigger game, like Persona 3, I think this is OK. Similarly, I can excuse visual novels, because their strength comes in their writing/narrative. But when it's the crux of the "gameplay", it comes off as really, really fake. It doesn't help that TokiMemo is quite tedious to play.
At any rate, yeah, it was one of the first articles on the site, before it had much of a solid direction. Even then, there are a handful of stuff that veers away from the usual "information only" articles - they're more the exception than the rule, but it adds some color here and there.

More GameFAQs guides need senses of humor. My favorite: Double Dragon 2. "I KIRR YOU BIRRY AND JIMMY REE!!!"

Well, I'm the first to admit that I'm a gamer first and a writer second...which I guess is why I have a comp sci degree and not an English one. Even a lot of my stuff here is very straightforward and not tremendously interesting to read on its own, barring occasional stuff like this Tokimemo bit (which I actually thought was fun, but mostly because I was in a bitchy mood when I wrote it.) All of the authors here have their own unique style too, which suits whatever they're writing about. Some of them may not seem as evident just on the basis that they haven't contributed as many articles, but I think a lot of them are better than mine in a number of areas.

I'd imagine Kunio might have found himself as a member of a yakuza family. Or - this might be a stretch - flip-flopped and became a police officer, using his Total Kick-Ass Power for the good of the people, instead of to take on turf wars.
Or maybe he just started playing dodgeball professionally.

I'm not going to comment on this article because I haven't read it. But I was always very drawn to Disco's way of writing. It's informative without going too far and telling you what button does what, fluid enough to make it easy and enjoyable to read, and covers a game's most defining characteristics while trying to stay as objective as possible. The bottom line is that they are an enjoyable read, unlike other styles where I just end up getting tired of reading how to block in mid air or which buttons to use for such-and-such super-master attack, ending up forming my opinion of the game based on the screenshots.

I really couldn't say it better myself. Kurt's writing style is part of the reason I got so attached to this site, and I really wouldn't know much about gaming without it.

Writing (about games) is a fine art. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Anyone can improve at it, but the truly good ones, are simply wired differently. They have a way of making a connection with the reader, no matter the game or genre. Kurt (as well as Rob AKA Dire51 and some others) have that natural ability.

My only writing advice is to just let it come out. Don't force it, ever. Don't try to write like someone else, write like you.

T_T Don't feel bad Dai Jou Bu..I like the over the top detailed style for the fighting game articles..I think it's crucial when describing why it isn't a standard fighting game as such.
