Yeeeeeehaw. If there's any series that gets the best moai treatment, Gradius is it! More games need moai... and joe has the right idea, too.

It's a shame that you didn't care too much for the AC version of Gradius III, Kurt. I must be the only one who thought it was better than the SNES version (yes, the better graphics, audio, and level design, really won me over compared to what we got on the SNES).

Ah, very nice. I actually never knew of a third Nemesis till now, heh the more you know.
Oh, Rey beat me to the mention of AFD.
Actually,I could easily write up and article for that game, unfortunately I haven't played the other entries in the series enough to write about those... I suppose it could just be left as a little section in the Gradius article but with it including craft from so many other games I figure it could have it's own.
-shrug- I'll leave the call to you. That aside, again, nice work.
EDIT I also recall the Boktai series having some minor mentions of Gradius. The first one had a frame Named Gradius, and in the second the first sword you receive is also named Gradius... strangely enough. I actually had screenshots of those two things that I was going to send to someone... probably long gone by now.
And I haven't seen this mention but I swear that there is a little Moai up on a shelf in Hammer's shop in Dawn of Sorrow.

I'd just like to point out that the enemy in Gradius Gaiden that looks like the ED-209 is called Big Ducker. It's just a bigger version of the ducker enemies that walk on the ceiling/floor. He’s just got a few more weapons to throw at you than the small ones do.
I liked how you pointed out that both Gaiden and V still manage to be really awesome games even though they took somewhat different routes in doing so. Gaiden worked within the standards set by the series and just cranked out a really great experience. V added features and changed how the game worked in some ways and gave the series the revival it needed after IV.
Also, I definitely agree that Solar Assault has to be experienced in the arcade to get the most fun out of it. The machine that was in our local arcade was so loud you could hear it a good distance outside (especially when fighting the salamander boss that shrieked when you hit him). It was pretty close to the back of the area, too, so you can just imagine how it sounded up close.

Solar Assault was so much fun in the arcades. Heh, I think ED-209 and/or the Xenomorph's head are in every shmup series ever at some point.

The gameboy Azure Dreams had a Moai as a monster, in case anyone was wondering. I didn't appear in the PSX version.

It came out already, it's called Otomedius. But it's not about Gradius, but it's probably in the same universe like Salamander, Twinbee and Parodius.

Who woulda' thunk? I've been playing tons of Gradius games lately, and now this article pops up. Really good work, mate! Now on with the nit-picking... ^_^; Page 2"and on of the foes in the Boss Rush stage has been replaced by Zelos, the final boss from Life Force" - "on" should be "one." And you might want to say Salamander instead of Life Force, since Saly came first and Zelos Force is the boss there too. Page3It might be worth mentioning that in the Gradius III and IV pack and PSP Gradius Collection, you can unlock a couple of the option formations and the improved reduce power-up from the SNES version by beating the game twice or racking up twenty hours of play time. "this will remove all power-ups from your ship (not sure why anyone would want to do this), but you can also lower the speed if you've selected too many Speed Ups, or grant yourself two Options instead of one." The ability to get rid off all your power-ups might be there to reduce rank. And the third '!' choice doesn't necessarily give you two options, it converts all your extra lives to options. Ugh. Page 5About credits in Salamander - if MAME is correct, then the number of credits allowed in single-player could be changed in the dip switches, with the default set to nine. It doesn't work like later arcade games, though; all the credits you want to use have to be deposited before the game starts and are converted directly to extra lives. And with two players, continuing is allowed as long as your wallet holds out, unless you both eat lead at once. Maybe you were going by the Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus, which judging by this review works the way you described. Anyway, Salamander's difficulty isn't that bad if you know what to do. There are several tricks that turn some parts of the game into a cake-walk. I don't think its difficulty is far off from the original Gradius then. Page 6The Game Boy games actually got some nice re-releases on the four-volume Konami Game Boy collection. The Japanese versions of the collection were for the 'ol black & yellow brick, with Super Game Boy support - borders and colored title screens. The European versions were for the Game Boy Color. Nemesis is found on Vol. 1 in both regions (and retitled "Gradius" in Europe) and Nemesis II is on Vol. 3 in Japan and Vol. 4 in Europe (where it was retitled "Gradius II: The Return of the Hero"). It looks less day-glo if I set VBA to "Game Boy colors." Anyway, we mostly don't cover cell phones here just for it being such a huge pain. True, but you try to cover them when they're particularly interesting (like the Athena games), don't you? Neo Imperial has a cool concept, but like Ray said it hasn't been dumped yet. According to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance Gradius Galaxies intro, Scramble is considered the first in the "Gradius" series. However, the Gradius Portable guidebook issued a few years after by Konami, lists Scramble as part of their shooting history, and the Gradius games are now listed separately That Konami DS collection said Gradius was the third game in the series started by Scramble, so it seems like for a while they considered Super Cobra part of the family too. But like you said, the Gradius portable book treats Gradius as the first Gradius game, as it should be.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that you could unlock the extra stuff in the PS2 version of Gradius III. Are you sure it's in the PSP one?
Most of my Salamander playing has been done on the PSOne version of Salamander Deluxe Pack. I didn't know you could pump extra credits in at the beginning. However, I'm PRETTY sure it disallows continuing at all on the last stage, even with two players - I've tried this on both MAME and the Deluxe Pack.
Those hints are pretty useful, although timing out the fourth level boss (the absolute worst part of the game) is still pretty cheap. The fifth stage is also pretty cheap unless you're powered up.
