Okay, can anyone explain to me exactly why they dislike Gradius 4? Personally, I've always liked the game myself. I recognize it's far from being the best in the series, but despite not having much new to offer, it's still a decent shmup regardless. Granted, I think the level 4 boss is insanely cheap, but I recall the rest of the game was quite good. I even once beat it without continuing to get the Stage Select on Gradius 3 and 4 for the PS2.

Gradius 4 is very underrated, it's considered almost as hard as Gradius 3 (except by loop 3), yet much fairer, sure there's nothing new about it, it's still a solid shooter. Not to mention Gofer's cheesy "I am the center of the universe" line at the end. I'm thinking lots of folks dislike it mainly because it came after Gradius Gaiden (IMO Gradius V actually didn't top Gaiden in terms of fun and replay value), which is a beautiful stunning game, the 3-D sections seem outdated, still a fun romp especially once you're maxed out in power and the rank kicks up and everything shoots at double the speed, or shoots at all. Fourth overall favorite Gradius game of mine (Gaiden, 3 arcade, 2 arcade, then Gradius IV, Gradius V is at the bottom of my Gradius list despite it being stunning, I didn't care for the job Treasure did with it).

Yeah I found this out on Nico Video a few weeks ago, told King Moai about it and he worked his way there to get the screen caps for the Gradius 2 Pro ending. Always nice to find pleasant surprises like that, especially considering how old the game is and all this time we never knew of this.

I was just listening to the collection of songs from the series and was wondering about the song titled Thunderbolt. Isn't that from Castlevania?! Also, how is it that Gradius III, released only a year after Gradius II, was never released for the PC Engine?

Good write-up on Rebirth--pretty much echoes my feelings on it.

I finally got around to playing Gradius ReBirth and really enjoyed it, so I though I'd check out what the Gradius article says about it. Not a bad write-up, but it's surprising that you didn't once mention that it is a remake of the first Game Boy game. That's a pretty big omission.
Anyway, I read through the whole article again and found a few more places that could use correction, though these are just minor ones.
Page 1
R-Type was released in 1987.
Big Core shows at the end of most stages, but the boss of stage 6 is the cell's nucleus and the boss of the final stage is the brain... though as you know, that's not much of a boss.
This is true, but it'd be more precise to say it turns red. I think all the Gradius games use the blue = healthy, red = omgno pattern.
This actually sounds better than the official name, but your screenshots for Gradius II and IV show it's called the power meter. Likewise, the "orbs" are properly called power capsules.
Konami's guilty of more confusing terminology; this enemy is an Option Hunter, while the Option Eater is a different enemy that pops up in Nemesis 3.
Should be "shoots," but I bring this up because the Up Laser only fires that upward beam. The normal Laser doesn't conflict with the Up Laser (or Down Laser), though, so you can use them both at once (but not Up and Down).
Should be "a flame weapon" and "Blaster." You might want to mention that it's a bug that makes it so lame. There's an option in Salamander Portable that lets you fix it.
Should be "Salamander Portable." This occurs in the body of the text and the caption of one of the screenshots. I bet the name would've been changed to Collection if it'd been localized, though, like with the Gradius one.
page 3
It fills the laser slot on the meter, but the weapon's just called Disruptor.
page 4
The planet's called Gradius. Uh-huh.
There's a litte more to it than that; if you destroy the bottom climate machine first the stage will turn fiery instead of snowy, and if you don't destroy either it'll stay normal.
I'm not sure what you mean by extra obstacles, but ReBirth does have hidden areas.
page 5
His name is just Zelos Force. Looks kind of like an eye, though.
Again, just as fear does not exist in this dojo, Earth does not exist in Gradius-verse.
page 6
There's a snake option in Gradius III, but not in the GBA game.
Also, I suggested a couple years back that you mention Gradius NEO -Imperial-, and you have, but the the neat thing about Imperial is that you play as a Big Core and the game scrolls right-to-left. It probably sounds more interesting than it is, but it's too bad the game hasn't left Japan.

I thought it was an offshoot of the MSX games. But then, I haven't played it in English... What exactly is the bug with the fire thing in Nemesis 2? Thanks for the rest!

I believe the first 2 Rebirth titles might have the look and feel of other games of the series, but they are really remakes of the GB games. Contra Rebirth and Operation C is the most noticeable one.

Now that I think about it, some of the level themes are kinda similar to Nemesis GB.
Really don't see the Contra Rebirth/Operation C connection though.

The only similarity to a previous Contra game in Contra ReBirth I've seen is the fact that Contra ReBirth has an underground cavern stage with a lava segment like the extra stages in the MSX2 Contra.
