Further proof that Konami was the greatest developer in the world in the 16-bit era. This is seriously among their best games for the platform.
"Granted, they only really borrow the color schemes and make references to the names, so these are more like vague approximations of these characters."
Maybe I should have sent in a screenshot of the character selection screen. The only reason that they only borrow the color schemes is because ALL of the characters are palette swaps. Their portraits in the character selection screen make it pretty obvious that they're supposed to be those characters in wrestler-ified form. The Moai's character portrait looks EXACTLY like Moai does in Gradius. Richter Belmont looks EXACTLY like he does in the 16-bit games. The Snatcher pretty much has the head of a Snatcher. Bill Rizer looks like he was yanked straight out of Contra. Sparkster even has the goggles on his head.
Something I forgot: Immediately after the characters hit the frame that's shown in the grappling timing example, beads of "sweat" (or something?) will fly up in the air. It might be worth mentioning that for people who have difficulty with the timing.

Yes, please do. The in-game screenshots don't really do it justice.

I just sent in screenshots showing the character portraits for each Konami character.

I just realized something. The weird looking floors outside of the ring during death matches are supposed to be layered with broken glass. It doesn't seem to have ANY effect, but it should probably be mentioned anyway.

Pro: Holy crap, this game looks awesome. Con: Dammit, no English translation yet? Another pro: It's fast, furious, and not too hard once you get the hang of it! Another con: Shit, ZSNES freezes up for no good reason every time I try to play into a fight for more than a minute!

Pro: Holy crap, this game looks awesome. It's seriously my favorite non-Fire Pro wrestler ever made. Konami really got everything right with this game. Fire Pro caliber controls, assloads of techniques, four promotions worth of wrestlers with four different styles, large cast, broken glass land mine exploding electrified ropes death matches, shoot fighting (!), KONAMI CHARACTERS, 3-on-3 tag matches, and even a career mode. Totally makes up for the fact that they were also responsible for the HORRIBLE Main Event. Here ya go. What version of ZSNES are you trying to play it with? Try downloading the rom from a different source.

What version of ZSNES are you trying to play it with? Try downloading the rom from a different source. I'm using ZSNES 1.42. Is that bad? I'll give another download a shot. Thanks for the patch, sir. ADD: GAH, the patch doesn't work. I'm sorry to be a pain, but do I need something that can open IPS files?

I'd also mention that Goemon is ALSO a reference to The Great Muta, and that the Octopus guy from Parodius has been human-ized too.

GAH. Either it's ZSNES itself, or the roms from Emuasylum aren't working right. Whatever the case, it's the same glitch; I only get to play the game for a few minutes, then the sound effects stop working. A few seconds later, BAM. Freezes up absolutely. This sucks, it does, because I'm enjoying this game for what little I can get out of it.

I'm using ZSNES 1.42. Is that bad? I can't recall which version I have, but if you give me a few hours I'll get back to you about that. What? Just put the .ips file in the same directory and rename it so that it has the same name as the rom. So if the rom is called "Jikkyou Power Pro Wrestling '96 - Max Voltage.smc", then the .ips file should be called "Jikkyou Power Pro Wrestling '96 - Max Voltage.ips". I'd also mention that Goemon is ALSO a reference to The Great Muta, Oh, right. That too. Actually... that's a bit iffy. It seems to me that it's just supposed to be a guy in a octopus mask. He's a member of the BOM federation, which has all kinds of crazy looking guys. And his name, if I remember correctly, is Kraken, a kind of mythological giant octopus. So he's probably just meant to be a guy in a kraken mask, and not a humanization of the octopus from Parodius. Just like how the skeleton guy in the same fed is just a guy in a skeleton mask, and not a humanization of the skeleton from Castlevania, or anything like that. Two things: (1) Right click on the rom, and choose Properties. What is the EXACT file size that it gives in bytes? (2) This probably has nothing to do with it, but what do you have the video settings at?

I'm pretty sure it's a bad rom. Make you you get one that has a (!) at the end and not the ones that say (b) or (a).

Ok, here's what I've found:
The rom at Emuasylum seems to be the only version of the rom that there is. However, certain versions of ZSNES have glitches when running the game. Version 1.51 (the most recent?) causes a small space in the lower middle of the rings to disappear, though this has no effect on gameplay. It also sometimes slows WAY down. I also tried it with a REALLY old version (1.36) and the game worked perfectly.
So, the solution? Try different versions of the emulator. 1.51 is good, but if it does slow down then you'll have to shut down the emulator and restart everything. This doesn't happen too often, though. If you don't mind playing it with an EXTREMELY out of date version, then go with 1.36 or something else older than 1.42. What I'd recommend is trying out versions older than 1.51, but more recent than 1.42. If you'd rather skip the trial and error process, then just look for 1.36, and keep that version just for playing JPPW.
ALSO, if the patch doesn't work, and you have a question about how to configure things, then just ask.

Interesting. Seeing the portraits, that'd make Fuuma (from Getsufuumaden) an homage to The Great Kabuki, as well.

ZSNES freezes up for no good reason every time I try to play into a fight for more than a minute! Did you ever get this working?
