Now that the Saturn emu scene has advanced far enough that some games are fully playable, I've been having a blast with some of that system's 2D games - namely Sexy Parodius, Saturn Bomberman, Cotton Boomerang, Princess Crown, etc.
Man, it's games like these - and 2D graphics like these - that make me long for the "good ol days." Hey, I like good 3D as much as the next guy, but I think I like amazing 2D even more.
I'm also rediscovering some lost 2D treasures on the PSOne. Panzer Bandit, Gunner's Heaven, Gradius Gaiden - yippee!
What are some of the Saturn, PSOne or N64 games that you think HAVE to be played by the 2D fan?

Well for the PSX and Saturn I would have to recommend Don Pachi, and Do Don Pachi, plus any Parodius and Twinbee game. As well as Gekioh, and Layer Section.
Twinkle Star Sprites stands out as one of my favorite shmup/puzzle game. Also, I highly recommend Alundra, and of course Final Fantasy Anthology.

Mischief Makers for the N64 is cool, as is Silhouette Mirage for the Saturn/PS1. There are plenty of others, but I'm to lazy to list them.

*coughs* Thousand Arms. Only game in America that forces you to date to become more powerful.

After hearing over and over that the PSX sucks at 2D, I'm always amazed at Capcom's MMX titles for the PSX. Sure, X 6 has some slowdown but the others don't have any at all!

Yeah, I have to say that even though I love my Saturn, I don't think the PSX was any slouch at 2D. If I remember correctly, it wasn't that PSX couldn't handle 2D, it's that Sony didn't want 2D games on the system, at least in the US.
Anyway, I'm finding great new 2D games for both systems all the time (I wasn't paying enough attention back when they were popular). I just got Thousand Arms and am about to give it a try - I'll let you know what I think...

Yes, Sony has a thing for refusing the existance of 2D games for it's system. Just about any 2D sprite game on PS2 (released in US and PAL) had to form part of a collection fo rthe most part.

Objection: Some of the later Tales of... games for the PS2 never reached states shores because Namco thought 2D wasn't Western enough for the Western market.

Are you sure that it was Namco? I thought SCEA is highly against 2D games unless they're in compilation form. For example, the most recent Metal Slug games that were released stateside.

I don't think it's necessarily that they're against 2D games as much as it's against old-looking games. The Metal Slugs were designed on hardware that was fifteen years old, so they'd rather have it seem like a nostalgia compilation rather than a complete release.
The Tales games are different because they are GORGEOUS 2D but Namco of Wherever is run by retards when it comes to localizing games. Either the American division is too small to translate them or the Japanese division just thinks the effort isn't worth it. I don't think SCEA is involved.
I guess if a company can prove there's a market for certain 2D games, SCEA will let them. Like the Nippon Ichi SRPGs.

Due to Namco's perception that games with sprite-based characters will sell poorly in the United States, which was formed due to the poor sales of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia, it is highly unlikely that Tales of Rebirth will ever be slated for a North American release... And if Wikipedia's wrong, I don't know who isn't!

Yeah, I find it funny that Namco has a huge load of games that no one here has ever heard of. I remember talking to a friend about Namco X Capcom and he asked me just what games had Namco made besides Tekken and Soul Calibur. -James

I can name a few good Namco games that few people have heard of. Thunder Ceptor, Finest Hour, Motos, Metro-Cross, Starblade...
