Which is recommended for Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance? The PS2 version controls better, but the XBOX version costs less. I still don't friggin' know which one would be preferable...

I heard that the Xbox version has port issues. Not just controls, but unpolished graphics, slow down, more loading, things like that.
Just how much is the price for the PS2 version you're thinking of buying? When I got MGS2S it was 20 bucks new.

You're right Shinigami. The Xbox had some slowdown in the tanker level during the rain. The load times ranged from 5 to 10 seconds more than the PS2. And the controls take a VERY long time to get used to (but then again, I'm also just used to playing MGS with a DualShock 2).
Other than that, the only real difference between the two would be that the PS2 version has the skateboarding mini-game that's not that great anyway

Ah, I see what you mean. Suikoden 3 is the same way. I could have bought it new for a decent price, but I waited too long and suddenly the game was rare, hard to find, and the price infladed.
Those prices are kind of high, but I personally think Substance is worth that price ( if you haven't bought Sons of Liberty that is). Are there any EB Games or Gamestop in your area? Maybe you can look around and find a used one in good condition at a decent price.

I've actually seen many copies on eBay, but some will no doubt escalate into "feuer frei" type bid wars, so I prefer to go via BIN. However, I'll check whatever local stores I can find... as a matter of fact, EBGames has used copies. Buuuuuuut... it says "May not include box or instructions," and that has me REAL suspicious. But it is $25... man, financial decisions suck. See, I wanna get Substance as soon as I can, and then snag Substinence ASAP so it doesn't end up the same way. There are many options, but I want to choose the one where I don't get screwed over. I'll have to think about it...

Substance is that rare? Geez...I had got the PS2 version a few years ago used at Gamestop for $17 - plus it was part of a buy 2 get 1 free sale. There's another one coming up around April 2nd (so I've been told) so you might be able to find it at a store nearby. But definitely don't order used games from Gamestop or EB online, you probably won't get packaging.
Anyway, I'd almost just suggest to go with the original MGS2. It's like $5. The extras on Substance aren't THAT cool - I never liked the VR missions, the Snake Tales are all very slapdash and the skateboaring section is embarassing (plus it's just from that awful Evolution game Konami put out.)
Substinence, on the other hand, is definitely a worthy upgrade.

"May not include box or instructions" is why I think you should go to the store itself and see what they have in stock. There's no way I'd buy a game if it didn't include those. And by going to the store, you can look at the condition of the disc before buying it, and if it looks like crap you can refuse to buy it.
Hey Kurt, what kind of extras does Subsistence offer to someone who doesn't have online capabilities?

I can vouch for all the Subsistence extras...I own it myself and have no online connection for my PS2.
The first disc contains the original MGS3 game, but you have the option of using a different camera angle (a user-rotated third-person view instead of the original overhead camera). Also, there is a new European Extreme difficulty mode (which ends the game if you're spotted), and the Demo Theater (which lets you watch all the cinemas from the game). As a bonus, you get more camo patterns and facepaints to use in Snake Eater (some of which can change the way you play the game - like the Flecktarn camo, which gives you unlimited battery power).
The second disc, "Persistence", contains the online game (which I have not played), the first two MSX Metal Gear games, two more stages for Snake VS Monkey mode, Boss Duel mode, and the Secret Theater (which contains parody versions of most of MGS3's cutscenes, as well as a short feature called "Metal Gear Raiden: Snake Eraser" and the E3 2005 MGS4 trailer).
