Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou vs The Super Power Army I haven't gotten TOO time to sit down with the latest Shin Megami Tensei game, but it's pretty cool from what I've played. It's a LOT different from all of the others, but that's not a bad thing. It takes place in 20s/30s Japan, you're some guy who is a "Raidou" (I guess that's a term and not your real name, since you can also name your character.) I guess you're a detective of sorts. On your first mission, you're called to meet this young girl, who begs you to kill her. Shortly thereafter, she's whisked away by this big robot type soldier thing. And thus you take off to town to investigate. Right now I'm just running around town, talking to people. There are random battles in the city, which is annoying but par for a Megaten game. They're all action based which is definitely kinda weird. Raidou attacks with a sword and also has a gun with elemental aligned bullets. You can also have a demon partner that attacks on their own volition, but you can set parameters to change their AI. You don't negotiate with demons anymore, instead you have to stun them with the opposite element then capture them. You can also use demons when running around town - one of them, Ukobach, can set people on fire which makes them angry. The other, Alp (the flying succubus thing) can read people's minds. So far it's been a game of running around town, seeing who I can talk to/or use demon powers on, and see if that allows me to progress. The backgrounds are all prerendered when exploring. The action runs at 60 FPS which is smoother than the others. The music is very much like Digital Devil Saga but some songs have a jazzy twist to them. You also have a talking cat that follows you around. It's fun just to watch your badass hero run around town, cape flying in the wind, with a tiny little cat trailing after you. Other than the annoying random battles, it's pretty cool. Definitely a nice twist on the formula, especially with the unique setting. I hope they translate this. Also, The War at Home is godawful, why the hell is that still on?

Nice. I wouldn't be surprised if Beezelbub was a secret boss in this game.

i was considering picking this up when i heard that the battles are action-based, but from how you're describing it, it seems like it may be a bit more involved than i'd thought. hopefully Atlus USA will announce something soon. not like i can complain, considering everything else they've announced recently.

And then, there's also Persona 3 to look forward to.

And then, there's also Persona 3 to look forward to. New method of summoning Personae FTW. The soccer moms are gonna have a field day with that one. Still, I hope we see P3 stateside. It looks freakin' awesome.

Meh, doubt the moms will even know about Megaten. They're too busy raising hell over Rockstar's Bully game. Strange thing is that Bully is supposed to be way more tame that the GTA series.
Ah well.

So Kurt, do you plan on adding this to your Megami Tensei article eventually?

Yeah. I need to spend more time with it though. I'm still on the first chapter. I found some big dragon-thing is a basement somewhere and he really wants some wine. And I can't find it.
Probably gonna do a bigger review for Siliconera too.
I need to add Jack Bros in there as well!

I forgot to mention that! Then the article will be complete until Persona 3 comes out, right?

there's still the rumored SMT for the DS that was announced at the same time as Persona 3. As well as the OVAs and other stuff that Kurt still has in white in the article.

Yeah I wanted to go over the manga and OVAs briefly. Except my (not quite legal) copy of Tokyo Apocalypse was corrupted and I've been too cheap to buy it on eBay.

VHS or DVD? I mostly want it for video caps.
I saw it at Otakon last year at one dealer but $20? HA.
