I fail to see why Mercenary Force is difficult to classify. It is simply a ground-based hori shmup, just like Guwange is a ground-based vert smhup. Let's not make things more difficult than that. Breakthru is an early example of a ground-based hori. Mike Singletons Shadowfax another.
