The game market is undoubtedly huge right now, probably the biggest it's ever been. My question is, do you think the game industry could crash anytime soon? Will the public get tired of video games?
The Xbox 360 is out and going fairly strong but hasn't been THAT impressive thus far. The PS3 is shaping up to be a disaster with a 500 dollar price tag. Barely any mainstream gamers have heard of the Revolution thanks to the fact that the media likes to pretend Nintendo doens't exist anymore. Original and fun games are becoming a rarity, nearly all big name games are sequels and the market is flooded with games so bad that they aren't even worth renting.
So, are things going to hit a stopping point? Is the industry going to crash under it's own weight? Or do you think the medium of gaming have become legitimate and mainstream enough that it would be almost impossible for a video game crash?

Well if the market crashes it will only take systems like the Xbox360 and PS3 with it ;D

I doubt it will ever happen because there are always consumers that are going to buy terrible, cookie cutter games and swear they're great. Just look at all the "urban" games that have been released at an astounding rate.

As long as there are sports gamers out there, there will always be people who drop 40-60 dollars on the various madden/nfl/nba/mlb/golf etc. games.
Those gamers tend to be repeat buyers, and those games, no matter how terrible, still generate tons of cash.
Based purely on the merrits of sales figures, those games alone should keep the market from crashing.
Keep in mind, that there are also tons of gamers who like rpgs as well, and there are certainly no shortage of titles available, so those games tend to generate a decent amount of money as well.

Most of those points are argueable and may not be real reasons to fear a video game crash as it has always been the same way. It's a discussion that's been done to death on the internets anyway, can't we rather discuss if the book industry will crash soon or not? My answer is, if you didn't already guess it, is that there will be no video game crash.

It probably wont happen. What happened with the arcade was primarly to loss of interest, At the time there wasnt much of an anti-piracy/copying law so a company could just blatantly steal/ripoff another game and only change the two pixels of a character sprite and sell it off as a different game.
That and the atari had just been released

No, it's not likely. The game industry has been doing great these past few years, and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.

'Sorry for missing this topic the first time around. Anyway, it's something I've thought about before, and I have reached the conclusion that nobody can predict with any degree of certainty the future of the industry. It's like trying to win a carnival game.
You can say how the industry's been strong for the past few years, but the past has shown how little that means. You can say how the industry's lack of innovation and failure to adapt has alienated the market, but again the past has shown how little that means. Only one thing is certain: There will be a number of ups and downs. Sometimes they'll arrive so fast, you won't realize it until it's already happened.

As much as I like to believe the industry will crash, it probably won't. Just look at how much publicity video games get, whether they're being featured on a show on TechTV or being lambasted by Jack Thompson for violent content. Games have too much publicity, and that is what keeps them floating.
In the end, games are going to be just like the movie industry--there's just so much gaming out there that it's a part of life.
The only thing I could possibly see bringing gaming down is if people aren't willing to pay the increasingly high prices, but truth be told, people are suckers for spending money and the more they spend, the more they feel it was worth it.

While I don't think a crash is likely anytime soon I would say it is almost deserved- The sheer torrent of garbage out there at the moment coupled with the Fact that in my opinion the Xbox 360 came a year too early, and even the PS3 is coming too soon in my opinion and yeah...I wish a tide would come and wash away all the crap
