Illegitimately, anyway.
So you start off as some kid named Ruka, with his (brother?) Klaus. You live on a place called Nowhere Island. There are dinosaurs you can run into and a talking cricket who challenges you to a fight. Also, all of the save points are frogs.
Your mom writes a letter to a cowboy named Flint, who I guess is related somehow. Probably your character's dad. All of the characters you get to name are your family, I think. Anyway, the viewpoint switches to Flint, who lives alone with his dog. There's this meteor storm, which lights Terry Forest on fire. Some guy from town named Thomas panics and enlists Flint to help put out the fire. And that's how far I got. Oh, some guy opened up a pod and bees or something shoot out. Wasn't there a bee or a fly in the SNES game? That accidentally got killed right at the beginning?
The battle system seems the same as Earthbound, although I've been told you can do combos by pressing buttons in tune with the music? I haven't been instructed how to do it in game so I haven't been able to pull it off, nor do I have any clue how it actually works, but that sounds awesome. The reason I never got anywhere in the original EB was the terrible battle system, so this sounds a little bit more interesting. Also, you can dash Wild Arms-style, so you move a little bit faster.
I think I'm gonna hook up the SNES and give Earthbound another shot.

Margo still keeps telling me to steal your boxed copy of Earthbound since you don't even like it and she loves it to death.

Ah, I'm just kidding. It just so happens to be my second-favorite RPG of all time, but no biggie. Wish I could play Mother 3,though...

neorasa: If something like Contact can make it to the US, I don't suspect that they're going to hold back on localizing Mother 3. Maybe Nintendo is going to launch it as a surprise - I mean, was there ever any press or advertisement on Earthbound?

Well, it's more like impatience. I can't even play RPGs anymore unless they have a dash button. Actually, Earthbound more just offends me out of principle. It's like they created the most bizarre, creative concept for an RPG in existence and then, instead of putting in a battle system that suited its quirkiness, they just stuck Dragon Warrior in there. It's just way too tragic for me to handle.

Lots of magazine ads/etc. Thing is, they basically outright said that the Mother 1 and 2 GBA cartridge would NEVER come out here, which makes me think they'll never bother with this. My dream scenario of course would be that they were actually waiting so that they could release a special game in the US called Mother 123.

It's just way too tragic for me to handle. Well, there's a reason: 1. Enemies are visible outside of battle, and 2. You can sneak up on enemies and kill them instantly if you're powerful enough, which is handy for level-gaining I mean, if you were to emulate your way through it, it'd be one of the most painless RPG experiences in terms of battles. Without that, it's just......monotonous! And there's nothing wrong with.....er, I mean....well.... ....it won't kill you, right?

Earthbound was alright. I'll agree with Discoalucard only because the battle system really is kind of lame. However, I really dug the humor in the game.

I am playing it right now! I don't think I've given a legitimate shot at this game since I bought it like seven years ago. The ability to dodge battles definitely earns it points, at least.
Actually I should probably be emulating it since I can just speed it up, but I have this comfy chair by the TV.
Also the game doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind on its soundtrack - it's either piss poor cacophony or goddamned amazing.
EDIT:
HAHA, the game just called me exceptional and played this whole fanfare because I scrolled through some text and kind of read it. Something about friendship and...something. Awesome! Should I be playing this game with some rum?

If nothing else, the legions of Mother fans will translate it. We'll have to wait a year or two, but it'll be free!
