To me, the best of the battles was in the text describing each attack. There were some funny moments such as the annoying old party man grumbling "about today's youth" or Pokey pretending to help Ness at the beginning. That added a lot of character to the battle system. I loved it.

Also the game doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind on its soundtrack - it's either piss poor cacophony or goddamned amazing. I know what you mean, the tune at your first encounters is beyond horriffic, but some of the themes outside of battle can be quite awesome indeed.

Really? I enjoyed a majority of the battle music, especially that techno music that played when you fought those Smiling Spheres.

The best Earthbound music track is in the track that plays in the Hospital. Listen to it carefully, the way that piece is done sums up what Earthbound is all about.
