Got the idea from another thread, but what do you think is the hardest game you've ever played on the NES?
So far its a toss up between Milon's Secret Castle and Dino Riki. Milon was hard simply because I had no idea when I was young that I had to ram into a block for 5 seconds to move it. If you didn't do that, you could never get farther than the 2nd "stage."
Dino Riki is absolutely brutal. It's bad enough that you're constantly being pummeled by enemies, but then there are really terrible "platforming" area where if you screw up even a little bit, you die instantly. The last few stages are riddled with bottomless pits, which make for cheap deaths, especially if you've maxed out your speed.
What are your thoughts?

Battletoads is so god awfully hard, that it's maddening. I mean, I really can't understand why people really like this game anyway besides the humor, because I've never been so fustrated with a game more than this "classic"

It depends. No one can argue that Milon Secret Castle and Castlevania 3 are hard, but which one is frustatingly hard due to poor control and game design and which one is hard because its brilliant stage design made it that way?
Some games are hard because they are stupid, they have poor controls and the stage design just sucks. Trojan anyone?

I'd have to go for either Battletoads or Ghosts N Goblins.

I'd have to go for either Battletoads or Ghosts N Goblins. As far as games that are considered "classics", yeah, I'd definitely agree. I remember playing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde years ago, and I'm pretty sure it made no sense. I also played Platoon, walked forward a few steps, and immediately died for some reason.

SOLSTICE. I agree with many of the ones said, but none of them match up to the isometric perspective controls, wacky hit detection, uber-frustrating jumping sections, minimal offensive ability, one-hit deaths, limited lives, weird (and also limited) continues, and the fact that you have to search high and low for all six staff pieces, and it can take quite a long time... if you even get up to the second piece.
All this and no backup save. Not even a password. Seriously, play Solstice, and Battletoads actually seems possible to beat.

Ohhh yeah. I remember Soltice. So much so that I can perfectly recall the death cry of your stupid little mage.

Although some people can beat them blindfolded I have to say the Ninja Gaiden games- solely because of the last set of bosses- I mean really- sending you back to the start of area 6-1 after dying against the final boss once?! I also agree with Battletoads- I tended to give up after the first bloody race sequence... Solstice definately is also up there- it made Landstalker and Snake Rattle N' Rolls isometric platforming look easy

I'd have to go for either Battletoads or Ghosts N Goblins. Ghosts N' Goblins is hard on any system though.

Ghosts N' Goblins is hard on any system though. Nope, the C64 version is easy. Back on topic;another very hard game is Wizards And Warriors II - Ironsword. But nothing is as hard as Battletoads;I love challenging games, but this is too difficult for it's own good.

Ironsword isn't too bad until the last level really- then it becomes a total chore. Also, it may very well have one of the worst endings I have ever seen.

Gyruss was hard as fuck. I can't imagine how anyone can beat that game. And I have to agree on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you turn into Mr. Hyde and basically you die.

If you think that's hard play Castlein. It's fucking irritating. You'll be like "Oh this is an easy jump" be all the way infront of the edge and drop like a fucking rock

I would have to say the original Castlevania is the only one I haven't beaten (not including the N64 titles...those are just painful) and I would say that Ghosts 'N Goblins is the hardest one on the original NES.
