I think all 3 covers are pretty cool in their own ways for different reasons.
The US one looks like artwork for a movie and has its own kitsch value, like someone said.
The European one looks kind of has an 80s anime look imo which I like.
The Jp one is very creative and imaginative and the art is incredible.

The US artwork was what made me buy the game on a whim a few years ago. :3

As it happens, I started replaying this recently. It really is a grand old dame. Very moody- the music in the computer terminal rooms being a great example- but there is a rich feeling of solitude that permeates this game.

As long as we're reviving this sucker. Interesting. But what made you decide it needed an "inspiration" in the first place? Was the boxart designer known for plagiarism or something? I have no idea who the box art designer for Broderbund was, but the two pieces of art look so similar that it can't be a coincidence. I used the word "inspiration" because it doesn't appear to be a direct lift from the Creature poster, unlike the cover of Contra, for example, where the artist directly lifted Schwarzenegger's body from Predator's poster and placed Bill's head on it. What I meant was, what made you look at the Guardian Legend boxart and think, "This looks like it was lifted from a movie poster"? Surely that didn't come into your head only once you had found the source poster, since you were clearly looking for it.

Hopefully a thread resurrection is okay, as I wanted to point out that the Japanese box art was done by Naoyuki Kato, who works for Studio Nue (scroll down a bit on the link to see where I got this from). They've made Macross, Space Battleship Yamato, and The Vision of Escaflowne, among others, and also helped From Software with their Armored Core games and contributed to Platinum Games' Infinite Space, too. I like the Japanese box the most myself. While none of them quite sync up to Miria/Alyssa's design in the game, it's the most interesting to me. Awesome info dump - thank you! What a coincidence that I'd found this thread today, because for a while I'd been thinking about the covers for this. Actually, I'm so impressed by all the information dug up for this thread, I'm almost tempted to make a blog entry on it all. Didn't realise Naoyuk Kato did the art, I honestly wondered whether they'd hired Oscar Chichono to do the art (like Sega hired Mobius for Panzer Dragoon). His Wikipedia page.Unfortunately I can't post any images, since his art is kinda semi-NSFW with regards to erotic bio-mechanical content. Nothing worse than nipples or HR Geiger, but best be on the safe side. These two don't appear to have nipples, but consider them NSFW anyway: Link 1 and link 2. Or just Google his other work, it's great. I think you can see why I'd have guessed he'd been involved with Guardian Legend's Japanese art, as both are in a similar style (and both are totally badass awesome). I love the Guardian Legend artwork. It's of such genuine quality that I'd honestly hang a larger version on my wall - were it available.

After seeing Chichono's site I now know why Rico looked like a certain Argentinian individual* in the Just Cause cover...*Not "Che" Guevara, although they probably DID use him as an inspiration. I actually mean Diego Maradona, since some gaming mags from my country mentioned that Rico looked a lot like him on the cover. No joke.

I can see the resemblance to Maradona, but that cover art is pretty obviously mimicking Korda's Guerillero HerĂ³ico photo of Che.

Surely that didn't come into your head only once you had found the source poster, since you were clearly looking for it. I wasn't. Someone posted the Creature poster on my board in a thread about horror films, and when I saw it, I was immediately reminded of TGL's boxart. When I compared the two, the resemblance was too similar to be a coincidence. Since Creature predated TGL by a couple of years, I wouldn't be surprised if the American artist used Creature's poster as his "inspiration," much like other game artists used other movie posters for "inspiration;" the example I gave about Contra being the first one that came to mind.

Thanks for the credit, there, Sketcz. I've been doing quite a few posts on the subject of regional differences between gaming box art at my blog if you or anyone else would like to see more. (hint - I am an anthropology student, and I find this fascinating!)
