I'd have to say the original Zelda and ADOM are great fun to explore first time around with no guides. Adom is a new adventure every time for me- and frequently a short one ADOM is a new adventure every time for everyone, considering how much of it is randomized each time you begin a new character. Speaking of which: Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun for the Sega Genesis. This RPG actually has hidden dungeons, and tons of them too.

Mario 64 is also fun to explore, to get all the secrets

...Except getting all the Stars was hardly worth the effort, unless you were a completionist.
