It's the end of the second day and I somehow got a computer in the media news room. I have a ton of pictures but can't upload them at the moment.
The best news about E3 was definitely finding out about Phoenix Wright: Justice for All. In the trailer, the little girl (Chiyo I think) is now named Pearl. They gave a new name for Mei Karma but it went too fast. I asked one of the girls at the booth about it, but she didn't know much. I have a press CD though, so maybe there's some cool images on there.
Other than that - maybe I am getting a bit jaded, but a lot of the new stuff really isn't THAT impressive. The Wii is definitely pretty cool, but some of the games (Zelda, Mario Galaxy) don't seem to use it for anything useful. Like, you control a pointer to...point at stuff. In Mario you can pick up little gem things, and use it to stun enemies, or make Mario spin, but...I dunno, it doesn't seem to add much. The FPS games were kinda cool, but the sword mechanics in Red Steel don't work nearly as well as you'd expect (it's a bit laggy, plus there are only a set number of directions you can slash.) Metroid Prime was great though, as was Wario Ware, which has like at least twenty different "configurations" to hold it in.
One of the best uses was Excite Truck, oddly enough - it seemed like only an OK game but using the controller as a steering wheel is pretty cool. However, this seems like the same function that the PS3 controller is going for too. Warhawk controlled in much the same way, but almost felt a little bit better, just because the controler actually has handles.
The rest of the PS3 stuff? Meh. None of the games look any better than any 360 games (except maybe MGS4) so they are going to have a hell of a time convincing people it's worth the extra money.
Xbox 360 stuff? There's some good looking games, but they run terribly so far. I don't see Gears of War anywhere which is lame. So far Shadowrun is showing off only multiplayer, and I was really hoping for a Deus Ex style adventure.
Castlevania Portrait of Ruin is cool, but it's pretty much what you'd expect. When Charlotte double jumps, she takes out a broom to ride on, which is cute. There's also an enemy with a rifle that uses a laser pointer to show it's path. It was a short demo though.
Starfox DS sucks. A lot. They took the worst part of Starfox 64 - the timed arena battles - and made them the whole game (well, demo.) The controls were pretty bad too, you couldn't use the d-pad or reverse the up/down on the touch screen. They should just make it like Panzer Dragoon like the old games and be done with it. I hope the full game turns out better.
I got to attend the press conference where they revealed SSB Brawl. Miyamoto and the guy who's in charge of it over at HAL - I think his name was Sakurai or something - talked about it a bit. They took suggestions for other characters, lots of people yelled Sonic, someone said Fawful, another guy said Master Chief and everyone laughed. Then someone yelled out Mr. Iwata and Reggie.
There's a lot to write about, but I'm tired and starving. If anyone has any questions, lemme know, I don't know the next time I'll get to a computer though.
