I just noticed that the next weekly kusoge is going to be number 50. I'm ready to celebrate once it's up. IT IS?! Because I'm not sure what we're putting up... Yet... Well maybe it's not totaly apropriate, given the number, but....how about if I submitted a piece on the Dexter's Lab game on Playstation ? It's anb unbelievabely ugly game with only a handfull of minigames (TWo of which are DDR), no actual level interactivity and a pathetic length. Plus the "custcenes" are repurposed footage from the show with terribly mismatched audio that does not sync up with the lip flaps at all, and some embarassing edits involving superimposing something onto the original background. I already wrote a piece on it on me blog.

Weekly Kusoge 50 is up! It's a Virtual Boy game! It's terrible! Awesome!
Celebration aside, I think this might be the first Virtual Boy game covered on Hardcore Gaming 101. I guess it makes sense that it would be in the Weekly Kusoge section. I had a Virtual Boy and it really is bad, if anything just for how it makes your neck feel after playing it for more than 5 minutes. The only two games I ever had for it were a very basic pinball game and tennis, which I guess aren't exactly involving experiences that make you want to play for hours. Man, I'm glad the Virtual Boy never came out with any RPGs. It makes my neck hurt just thinking about it.

Oh man, that one looks like crap. It honestly looks like a crappy unlicensed game rather than an officially licensed release.
And the Nintenndo/Ninntenndo stuff was hilarious. Seriously, how could they fucked that up THAT badly?
EDIT: Also, I wanna see that blog post apachacha mentioned that he made.

Here ya go. plaingamreviews.blogspot.cz/2012/07/dexters-laboratory-mandarks-lab-sony.htmlAbout the article, I find it funny how James Rolfe apparently doesn't even know about this game, or didn't when he made his VB review. I mean, the game basicly looks like you're playing with intestines, you can't tell me he passed it up on purpose ! Hell he even included a segment later after he got Jack Bros.

A pretty interesting article, and I see it was written when the 3DO was still alive.

Man, I'm glad the Virtual Boy never came out with any RPGs. It makes my neck hurt just thinking about it. Sounds like you had it poorly positioned. Why didn't you try adjusting the stand or moving the entire system to somewhere else? I know some people get eyestrain or headaches, but neck pain should be easily avoidable. Personally, I usually just place my Virtual Boy on a high shelf and play standing up. My position is completely natural and comfortable, without having to crane my neck or anything. Anyway, it's a shame to hear that Virtual Lab is a poor game, especially given its value, and it's an even bigger shame if the developers were forced to rush it out. Maybe it could've been a decent game with adequate development time. The abrupt end to the Virtual Boy really did screw over a bunch of games. Personally, I wouldn't say the Virtual Boy had "several" stinkers. Very few of its games are bad as far as I'm concerned. I'd say it has one of the best quality ratios for any system. Of course, that's not a hugely difficult task when a system has so few games and a large percentage are first-party Nintendo games by the late, great Gunpei Yokoi. It's just too bad that the hatred gamers have for the system in general (which, these days, often comes from blind worship of people like the AVGN and other talking heads rather than unbiased, firsthand experience) prevents people from recognizing the amazing quality of games like Wario Land on Virtual Boy. As for the Nintendo misspelling, my favorite screw-up like that is how tri-Ace misspelled their own name as "try-Ace" on the Super Famicom version of the first Star Ocean. I mean, at least J-Wing spelled their own name right on Virtual Lab. :P

On that note I'd love to see a new, good game come out on the VB made my those people who still make Game Boy colour games just to spite everyone hating on the system I honestly see what, two good games for the whole thing though, not counting sports game which I never realy play anyway, so it's not like people hate it because they want to, they hate on it because it doesn't have a lot of things to like about it. Of course I never actualy physicaly owned one of these things, because I'm kind of partial to seeing, but it would be interesting to try it out.

(which, these days, often comes from blind worship of people like the AVGN and other talking heads rather than unbiased, firsthand experience) Also because of that Waterworld game. And I did try out some VB games (through emulation) a few years ago and it's not as bad as pretty much the entire Internet leads you to believe. I think I even found SOME enjoyment out of Waterworld.

I tried to make a makeshift strap for the back of my head, but it didn't work out so I always had to tilt my head back all the time to keep it on. I guess I just remember my neck hurting because of that. I really should not be talking about neck pains form using the system if I technically was not using it the correct way. I apologize for misleading people into believing that their neck will hurt from using a Virtual Boy.

Of course I never actualy physicaly owned one of these things, because I'm kind of partial to seeing, but it would be interesting to try it out. If you've never actually TRIED the system, how can you say that it only has two good games? Or how can you say that it's bad for the eyes? See, this is the kind of thinking I'm talking about. People just blindly accept the opinions of others as their own, instead of actually thinking for themselves and getting the experience necessary to come to a genuine opinion. Contrary to what the 14-year-old kiddies claim, even though they've never even seen a Virtual Boy in person, the Virtual Boy does have good games, and it doesn't hurt everyone's eyes. Some people are indeed sensitive to it, just as there are people sensitive to low frame rates, first-person perspectives, etc., but plenty of people can play it just fine. A lot of the problems that people have can also be attributed to not properly adjusting the display before playing (there's a screen before every game where you're supposed to turn the knob on top if necessary to get the picture as sharp as possible while retaining the four corner squares) or from playing far longer than Nintendo recommended (the games even have an automatic pause so you can take breaks). So those people who failed to follow Nintendo's suggestions blame the eyestrain or headaches on the system when, in reality, it's their own fault (although it could certainly be argued that the Virtual Boy is more finicky than the average system). But, of course, on the internet, instead of looking at the facts, it's more fun for people to be like "lol the virtual boy sux and makes ur eyes bleed!" Anyway, if the Virtual Boy has a lot of bad games, then what are they? Because, as I see it: Good: Wario Land Mario's Tennis Teleroboxer Galactic Pinball Panic Bomber Mario Clash Jack Bros. Nester's Funky Bowling Red Alarm Vertical Force 3D Tetris V-Tetris Bad: Waterworld Virtual Lab I'm not going to bother to list every game, but we can see which way the system leans nonetheless. Not all of the "good" games are necessarily great, but they're not remotely bad either.

Basicly, alot of this is either sports or tetris. I want to try the other ones one day. Edit: and I did, specificaly I just played through Space Squash. A realy interesting game, but I do wish you had more then four standard opponents repeated all throughout. Still the bosses were fun, especialy the monkey and the final boss (not sure if different on other routes).
