Wasn't Family Dog created by Brad Bird? Nope, but he was one of the writers. Brad Bird both wrote and directed the original Amazing Stories backdoor pilot for Family Dog so yeah he is the creator. EDIT: and is even credited as such in the end titles.

I remember taping the pilot and watching it a lot, wondering when it would make more. The reason for the years-long gap was due to the studio trying to make theatrical-quality animation for TV, which takes a very long time. In short, too ambitious.
Of course, the full series still wasn't as well-animated as the pilot.

Amazing Stories is a totally underrated TV series by the way that you should check out if you're a big Spielberg fan (he actually directed one episode), it's gotta be one of the deepest cuts of Spielberg's producer career.
Despite the relative obscurity of the series though I heard it's actually getting rebooted by Bryan Fuller.

I love Amazing Stories! Probably one of my favorite TV series of all-time. It had a staggering amount of big-name talent attached to it, both in actors and directors. A shame it didn't do too well during its original run.
I remember seeing the Family Dog episode with my mom and brother when it originally aired, and it was always a favorite of ours. (It did kinda stand out, though, being the only animated episode.) The later series just didn't recapture the magic of the original, though.
Fun fact: I remember the first segment of Family Dog being shown theatrically as a short before the film The Land Before Time.
Oh, and Spielberg actually directed two episodes: "Ghost Train" (the pilot) and "The Mission" (a guy gets trapped in a ball turret during a dog fight in World War II).
I hadn't heard about the proposed revival. Seems like Spielberg should be involved, though.

I remember seeing the Family Dog game before I heard of the TV show. And I recall when the TV show was on, it seemed like it only ran a couple weeks before it got pulled.

You forgot to mention the absolutely terrible soundtrack. I'm not familiar with the show but I remember renting Family Dog back in the day and being absolutely appalled at how awful the music was, a quick Youtube shows I'm not remembering inaccurately. I guess it's subjective though.

For some reason I always confuse Family Dog with Rude Dog, and then I specifically think about the hot pink Rude Dog t-shirt my dad would sometimes wear around the house. Man, the '80s.

Remember when Bad Dog got his own show? You know, the mascot of the After Dark screensaver program? Good times.
