You mentioned Half-Life. Ironically I found myself thinking that Half-Life is what a 3D Metroid game would be like... except HL doesn't allow you to backtrack very far.
Metroid Prime is definitely a disappointment. I really don't want to re-play it just to write an article, but perhaps it'll make better games a so much grander experience.

Hehe, did you really have so little fun with it? In its own right, I think it's an amazing game; it just isn't what 3D Metroid really should have been, or deserved.

I think all Metroid series is amazing. Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are defentley the best in the series, but I can't decide which one of them is better. And I think Metroid 1 should get more respect. It may not be a true classic and its defentley not standing by today's standards but it was so unique in its time and it's one of the most revolutionary and influential games in the history. Because of that Metroid 1 must get more praise even if Super Metroid surpass it in every level and thus stealing most of its glory.

A lot of people find Metroid unplayable today. Me, I'm not sure, since I grew up with it, and I'm familiar enough to jump right in and play it without a problem. On the other hand, I have a bitch of a time with Metroid 2.

Welllllllllllll... I think Metroid Prime (and MP2) are very solid games that do capture some of the classic Metroid spirit. However, (and do keep in mind that it's been a while since I've played either MP game), it seemed like there was more annoying backtracking to do than in any other game. Or, at least, backtracking itself just felt more irritating. And I just tend to prefer 2D to 3D most of the time, so there. ... Klatrymadon, you S of a B! Sup? I'd just like to say that I totally concur with the music issue... at least for the music in Super Metroid being really atmospheric, appropriate, and just so awesome. The initial tune in Brinstar sounds like you've touched down on a completely new area that feels so different, despite Samus having already been to Zebes before. But what I really love is the hyper-creepy tune that hums when you've reached the red sector of Brinstar, with some rooms glowing with an ominous light. The music says, "You haven't even scratched the surface of Zebes... now behold that which is beneath!" ;D ... though I don't remember much about MP's music. I guess it wasn't that memorable... although, it did use a few prior tunes from Super Metroid.

Hiya, mate! Yeah, both of the Brinstar pieces in SM are awesome. I think a lot of the tunes that people tend not to remember are some of the most evocative in the game, as well. Like the one that plays in the room before you fight Kraid, and the tune that plays in the boss statue chamber. Ah, SM just gets everything right! It's funny that Kenji Yamamoto composed the music for both SM (with Minako Hamano) and MP... you'd think they were done by completely different people. Maybe he's just lost his edge these days, or needs Hamano to steer him in the right direction. Maybe SM's matchless soundtrack was just a beautiful fluke!

SM music is a timless classic but MP's music is pretty good as well. i know what you mean though, perhaps it's because it's harder for him to work with an american team due to language barriers.

I really enjoyed the Norfair remix in MP. It's one of those rare occurances where a remix almost sounds better than the original.

Since SM's lower Norfair song was one of the best in the game, I was very pleased at first with MP's reprisal of it, but the novelty of it eventually buckled under the fact that the song was totally inappropriate in its new setting. In Super Metroid, it was set to one of the final areas of the game, rife with myriad environmental hazards as well as some of the toughest enemies, with bizarre Chozo sculptures for scenery and Ridley, the most intimidating Metroid boss there is, waiting at the end. The aggressively ominous quality of the music went hand in hand with the action. In Prime, however, the song is set to...some caverns. With some lava. I can't help but feel it was misused.

A lot of people find Metroid unplayable today. That's because a lot of people are weenies. If they think Metroid is unplayable, then I'm surprised they can play much of anything.

The aggressively ominous quality of the music went hand in hand with the action. I do highly agree with that. It's like you're getting to the core of the matter, and the pressure is really on. When I first heard that composition, I was sweating as much as Samus would have been if she didn't have her Gravity Suit! Hazards like that one giant room where the lava was rising at an alarming rate, and tough enemies like the golden kung fu Space Pirates you fight before Ridley! They were bastards to destroy, I thought... ... you may have a point there. As I said, I haven't played MP in a while, but... well, now that you mention it, it was cool to hear one of my favorite pieces of music again, but... it played at a point in the middle of the game when you still had a great deal to go. It lost most of its climatic value due to its placement. That's does it. I should force everybody on Earth to play Bokosuka Wars, and THEN they'll know what 'unplayable' truly is! They'll be crawling back to Metroid with open arms and doing their damndest to beat it in under two hours!

Forget Bokasuka Wars, force them to play a Color Dreams game.

Hey, I kinda liked Bokosuka Wars as a kid and even finished it once on MSX. ;D It's more playable than some Hydlide.

I can't play the original Metroid, the very task is impossible to me, I blame the wierd level design rather than any intense difficulty.
