I think that was my only major niggle- keeping it political would have been much more interesting. That and maybe a more interesting lead- he didn't need to be a bald space marine or a OTT animé kid but he could have been less of a wet lettuce. Gameplay wise I did enjoy it 90% of the time - though I found that it did have that niggling issue of the computer pulling off some rather beardy moves that you couldn't possibly do

I think of Valkyria as all kinds of awesome. I'm not sure if I'd say that, since I never played any of the VC games. It's a bit justified regarding VC1 since it's on a system I don't even own, but I still don't know WHY I haven't gotten VC2 yet.

I'd agree that FE and VC have little in common. I think of Valkyria as a tactical wargame. I see much more of Squad Leader in it than of Fire Emblem and that ilk. I've always seen Valkyria as some sort of Front Mission, but with tanks instead of giant mechs, and with troops as well. I haven't tried Front Mission; a grognard friend of mine really panned the DS version. It's always looked to me like X-Com with mechs. I should give one of them a whirl some time.

The first Front Mission remains one of the few SRPGS I've actually beaten. I usually get bored part way through them.

I loved Front Mission 3 and 4 (slow as they were), but couldn't stand the DS re-release of FM1. It just felt too old.

I really liked 4, but it seems like the link system it has utterly demolishes the pacing of the game eventually. Battles that should be like 40 mins end up being like over an hour, due to all the animations.

I thought you could turn those off. Could be wrong, though.

I love Front Mission 3 for allowing me to have Spider Mechs with Shotguns

I liked how the two plot paths were very, very different. True, you're essentially doing the same thing in every mission, but the story itself is drastically different. The fake internet was kind of interesting, too.

The only FM games I ever played were the Super Famicom original and the DS remake. In the case of the SFC version, in Japanese. Without any translation patch at all (if there is)

Finally did it, in three turns no less.
Okay, it's based on a strategy I looked up on Youtube for a two-turn victory, but there are some random factors, plus I also took out the Ace, which did not happen in the video.
Right, have Edelweiss take out the anti-tank gun at the first camp on your left. If you've equipped all the accuracy boosting parts, it'll be a peace of cake at this range. Now, hide it behind the building at the start, where you should've positioned Rosie and Largo. They're all completely hidden from enemy attack now.
Alicia should be deployed at the far-left position. Use Awaken Potential and rush her to the southwest camp, let her Valkyia potential kick in, and shoot Ty the Immortal in the head. Now rush to the camp north of you, where you killed the anti-tank gun, and have her take out the two remaining guards there. You should have two or three CP left, so have her retreat.
Now, call Alicia back to your base, and call in your best Lancer at the newly acquired camp. Let the enemy do their thing, and when it's over, the Lupus should be right next to the camp you summoned your Lancer to. Use Penetrate and Awaken Potential on the Lancer, and start unloading into the Lupus' armor. If you run out of ammo, use a Resupply order and keep going.
Now, if you're lucky like the guy in the video I saw, you should take out both the armor, and also destroy the Lupus completely. For the record, the video used Elysse, while I ended up using Rosina. Elysee's potentials are far more suited for this though, so if you use her, you should have the mission done by the end of turn 2.
But if it drags into turn 3, have your Lancer retreat before their last turn is over. An enemy will recapture the camp, but it's not important. What is important is that the Lupus has pulled into the northwest camp to repair, but their armor will not be restored by the time your turn comes up (if it can be restored at all after it's been destroyed, anyway). It's radiator should be facing the road, so now's the time to move the Edelweiss in position. If I haven't made it clear, you should just ignore all the tanks, since they will not be an issue.
After you're in range, two shots to the radiator should do the truck, ending the mission in victory.

I decided to NG+ a bit of VC1 yesterday. Did anyone really A rank/1 turn these missions the first time through? I played through the battle at Barious, and in every mission prior to Barious itself, the A rank/1 turn strategy seemed to depend on using units that have the levels and equipment from a prior playthrough. The 1 turn strategy on, for instance, Vasel Urban Warfare involves charging directly into a hailstorm of fire from several tanks and 5-7 enemy shocktroopers. I can't see this working on a first time playthrough.
I really missed a lot of orders the first time through, though. I got three new ones just playing through that handful of missions yesterday.

It's easy...when you use a guide. I have way too many games to try to figure that kid of stuff out for myself anymore.
