No I don't no one that I'd give such a might acclaim to but I got thinking with a comment mazinsaga made in the overrated thread. What is the best most well realised sprite character (animation and realisation of personality).
Examples would be nice but would also be overly difficult.
I'd probably say some of the GGX characters has some of the best animation (sharp and crisp with no blurred spite coverings). I have no idea about personality in a sprite though can't think of one that stands out atm though I'd say the hero in Out of this World has a heap of personality in his sprites style.

Terry from Mark of the Wolves (especially that jacket-tossing winpose), Alucard from SotN, and (my personal favorite of these) Tarma from Metal Slug.

Alucard from Symphony of the Night and pretty much the entire cast of Street Fighter III.

Animation-wise, nothing beats Elena from SFIII series. Capcom even reduced the detail and color to make her have more frames than any other sprite. Though Hugo, due to its size, is more impressive, I believe. Other nice examples are Gradriel from Princess Crown, every boss from Pulstar and Blazing Star as well as the ones from Mushihime-sama. Then there're the multi-sprite-based characters, where we could include the ones from The Rumble Fish series.

wildweasel, why only Tarma and not Marco? I have no idea at the moment save for the Prince from Prince of Persia, though.

How about Strider Hiryu from Strider 2? And I'd argue that even though the Guilty Gear series are hi-res and have some realy kewl characters, they are somewhat lacking animation wise. The Last Blade series are also worth a mention.

I will concur with Alucard, SF3, and MotW... and let me also add Art of Fighting 3. For 1996, those had to be some of the BEST graphics in fighting games. I swear that they used motion capture technology to make those highly fluid sprites.

AoF3 was the only SNK game to use motion capture.

How about Strider Hiryu from Strider 2? Cool, but doesn't really compare to even the cast of Osman, IMO (though the hero himself looks rather silly, in a Sketch Turner kind of way). My vote? Kunoichi from Ninja Warriors Again. Uh, maybe I'd better think about this a bit.

Yeah, Osman is kewl, alltough I would go as far as saying they are about even in animation quality. Also, Daraku Tenshi, Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku Toukon, Rage of the dragons, Super Gem Fighter and Waku Waku 7 are worthy of mention.

For the Super NES, I always thought that Yoshi's Island looked amazing, even if it was really simplistic

HAnd I'd argue that even though the Guilty Gear series are hi-res and have some realy kewl characters, they are somewhat lacking animation wise. That's an easy argument to win as GGX has awful animation (GGX+ suffers from this also). It wasn't until XX and Reloaded that some characters got this fixed up. Elena is probably the biggest technical achievement as far as number of frames go, though overall I think the Samurai Shodown III and Last Blade sprite sets are the best ones out there. Art of Fighting 3 is another huge technical achievement that looks beautiful though is somewhat bland. Outside of fighting games I'm a huge fan of the work done on Richter Belmont and Alucard as we as the Jake's Assault Suit in Cybernator. Demon's Crest is also a great realization of Firebrand that everyone should play through. Absolutely beautiful game from start to finish, flawless art direction. It looks just as good as Symphony of the Night even if there's less frames of animation on its protagonist (though its enemies are far better animated than the majority of the SotN cast). The original Sonic the Hedgehog sprite was a relevation when the game came out due to the idle animation and other details. Probably one of the best realizations of a personality given the technology available at the time.
