www.videogameden.com/Another good review site. Has reviews for HuCard and CD-ROMĀ² games, as well as reviews for Famicom, Disk System, and Super Famicom stuff (no Sega reviews oddly enough). Even though most of their info is manual/Wikipedia regurgitation and some of the reviews are not very informative ("the playability is awful", what does that even mean?), there is still plenty of content to look forward to like manual and ad scans.

Magical Chase is a fun cutesy shmup. It's hard as hell though. Also, since you're using emulation, get both the US and Japanese versions as they are different (obvious graphical differences, gameplay I don't remember).

Interesting pages jonny, I'll have to look through these later.
I've been looking for good/obscure PC Engine & Duo games since I bought a setup at Christmas. I really like the arcade ports from Namco and Taito, but they're kind of redundant these days what with emulators and compilations.

I still want to try out Kaze Kiri despite everything that's been said about it. The second review on the Brothers Duomazov site seems pretty positive about the game. The problem is that most PC Engine emulators only recognize CD-Rs and not ISOs and my CD burner is stored somewhere else right now. It's a pretty stupid design choice if you ask me (emulators are just as illegal as ROM images).
I second the recommendation for Bloody Wolf, but I didn't mention it because I'm sure that's available on the Virtual Console and the OP said no Virtual Console titles.

Use either Alchohol 120% or Daemon Tools to set up a virtual drive, then mount the ISO and run from there. Totally bureaucratic workout, but it beats burning CD-Rs. Still, a lot of ISOs for PCE games are in weird, outdated formats, or need to be de/encoded, or whatever to get working right.

Recommended. With a d. Recommended. I shudder thinking of how someone who spells the word that way would try to pronounce it.

I've had better luck with using PCE-P (is that right?) for some reason; definitely for getting Dracula X to run. Man, that was a bitch to set up. BTW, has there been any word about the "Dead of the Brain" translation that Junker HQ was working on? I don't think they've mentioned anything since they even announced it.

Every single rip I've seen of Dracula X seems like it was done by a moron. A competent one should work without a problem.

I played a great rip of it once! It's long gone, though, I don't think I'd be able to find it again. It's on the virtual console now, anyway.

It was always a pain getting the sound files to work, mainly.
Anyway, I got a copy (minus spine card :/ ) cheap when Wolfgames threw in the towel. BUT STILL...

I wouldn't recommend Martial Champion.

Turns out I had Daemon Tools all along. Nice! I got to play the Forgotten Worlds ISO I had for a while. Is there any freeware software to convert those annoying "ape" sound files to "wav"?

I recommend the Legendary Axe games. Actually the second one is my fav due to the excellent music and creative villains. It's challenging but not frustrating like many other character action games of the era. Plus, it has some really surprising story bits.

^This. The Legendary Axe games rock.
I would also recommend the Gradius port, Hana Tahka Daka (sic?) aka Super Long-nosed Goblin, and... uh...
You know, the other posts in this thread have everything I have to recommend.
