You know, I had the impression that this game's US release was going to get some people bent out of shape, regardless...just not over this. I'm also wondering how many people are comparing the fan-translation and official one word-for-word, as well. You know, just to be bitchy. In this case, I find both parties at fault. Fans should not automatically assume that every feature in the Japanese release will make it into the English one (there could be all sorts of genuine reasons, both technical and legal, but given the secretive nature of the games industry, you're probably not going to know). Ideally, it would be great to have all the features the Japanese release has and there have been plenty of cases where a game's English release has added content, fixed bugs, etc. Atlus USA, on the other hand, should have forewarned people that this feature was missing prior to its release, thus preventing this little incident (they didn't have to say why if there's any particularly sensitive involved, that's understandable). I mean, they are pretty well regarded by the niche gaming community and keeping the lines of communication open between them and their (often small) audience goes a long way and makes them feel appreciated. For the people who have already played the fan-translation; it's easy to see why you're mad, given that the official release / port has less extra content than before, thus making your purchase seem a little on the hollow side. I can't say that I personally feel your pain because I haven't played Innocent Sin, so it'll all be new content for me. Plus, the upcoming EU collector's edition is looking pretty neat.

Yeah, I am so jealous about that. I only learned about that after purchasing the NA copy, or else I would have imported. Atlus cutting the content sucks, but it didn't seem like it was something that many players will miss. They way they cut it without warning, and the relatively crappy responses they are giving, is what sucks the most. If you can't be up-front and honest with your customers, you're gonna lose business. Then again this is Atlus, and their fan base seems to let them get away with a lot of stuff...

Fans should not automatically assume that every feature in the Japanese release will make it into the English one But why shouldn't they? I want to have the same experience people in Japan do, no matter whether I'm reading books, playing games or watching movies. And Persona 1&2 fans are always being screwed in the West. Remember Revelations? Remember PSX version of Innocent Sin? Atlus kept telling us with pride that days of cutting content are already behind us when they brought P1 stateside. I don't want publishers to think that I will buy every product they sell no matter what its current state is. And I don't want to read forums to know whether the game I bought doesn't have some content missing. Yes, sadly. Everytime I talk to some of them it feels like arguing with Capcom fanboy who thinks that his favorite company is simply perfect. I'm sad that many sensible fans of SMT moved on to other series after P3 and P4 came out. I like these games, but their fanbase can be horrible at times.

I just noticed the blog post on this issue. Good job Kurt. Companies really should take more responsibility for cutting stuff out of localizations, even if it is a simple heads up for customers. They may have never mentioned the quest mode for the NA version, but if you look at their own forums, guys like CJ Iwakura were asking about the mysterious new content for awhile. So obviously, they were just trying to hide the cuts until the pre-orders and initial sales shipped.
If I recall correctly, this happened with one those Sonic Collections too. Sega cut the Streets of Rage games to get a lower ESRB rating. The games were replaced with Vectorman or something equally shitty.

Well, untill that Persona fighter comes out in the next couple years or so, the latest Persona games are gonna have to suffice. I doubt a P5 is gonna be thought of any time soon unfortunately. (As for SEGA, i thought Vectorman was an alright game, but streets of rage, not so much.)

Has anyone from Atlus come out and said "This is the first time Innocent Sin has ever come out in the US! Be grateful just for that!" Or their defense squad, for that matter? Atlus fanboys are really, really defensive of the company even when they do really stupid things.
It does suck when content is cut, though honestly this isn't content that would've interested me in the first place. I'd just be happy enough owning a legit copy of Innocent Sin. Still they should've been more forward about this than they were.

BTW, doing the install does next to jack and shit to the obscene load times.

For anybody who's played the PS1 translation patch, how does the PSP version's translation compare?

It's much better. The dialogue has more of a localization quality flow to it.
I enjoyed the fan translation, but it did have segments that felt awkward.

I enjoyed the fan translation, but it did have segments that felt awkward. I haven't played the fan translation, but I'd imagine that it would be like a lot of fan-subbed anime in which it would be overly literal and stilted. Good to know that the official one is better, looking forward to its EU release (roll on November 4th).
