I picked up Persona 2 Innocent Sin for PSP this week. I was excited to dig into the new Climax Theater mode, which was supposed to offer DLC missions and a Question Creation mode. Quest Creation sounded really cool: you could build your own Persona style quest with NPCs, rewards, and custom dialogue. However, after buying the game, I found that Atlus cut both of those from the NA version for some reason.
It is still cool to have Innocent Sin in legit form (although the fan translation was very good), but I wish Atlus USA would have just came outright and told us that this stuff was getting cut. It is bullshit to beat around the bush on features that customers have been asking about...some poor souls have even tried beating the missions over and over in Climax mode to unlock the cut materials, not realizing they weren't even on the NA disc.
Shame on you, Atlus!
Here is the official Atlus response:
Hi,
You are correct. The ability to create your own quests was removed in the North American version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Thank you for buying the game. We hope that this news doesn't detract from your enjoyment of Innocent Sin too much and ask for your understanding regarding this whole matter.

Typical... i regret geting the game myself. I liked Persona 4, however it was kind of silly of me to think Persona 2 would be the same. I didn't know about any of that extra stuff Atlus said was gonna be in the game, and now i'm glad i didn't. Course i already went and bought the game at it's release, so i may as well beat it.

Atlus is obviously just continuing the tradition of axing content in the Persona series during rushed translation (*cough*Snow Queen quest).

The Snow Queen quest made in back for the PSP port. My only idea on the quest creation mode being axed is that it was meant for uploading your creations to PSN for other players to download and play. The PSP is almost dead in the US,so maybe Atlus considered it to be not worth the effort especially for a really low print run.

I wonder why they couldn't just add a patch later and fix this. What a load of shit.
I bought it anyway because I'm a fanboy, but for most people it would be better to just run an .eboot of the fan translation off a modded PSP.

The eboot runs alot faster too For some reason, IS's data install doesn't work with custom firmware. So now my official retail copy runs slower than the translated .eboot and has the half the exclusive PSP content cut out.

You could rip the ISO to your memory stick though, that should have the same effect as the data install.
But yeah, uh, this is pretty crappy on Atlus' part, especially since they didn't come out and say it up front.

I hadn't even heard about the custom quest thing, so it's a non-issue in my eyes.

Ah, cool, so i'm not the only one left out of the loop. ;D As all the others said, it's pretty lame to release a game without telling anybody about details being left out. Almost a reason to sue. Looks like another single player dungeon crawling rpg. Oh well... it's only a remake anyway.

Creating your own quests sounds kinda dumb anyway, so I'm not too perturbed. It's kinda strange to have actually cut it though.

This link apparently gives the rationale, though I'm at work so I can't read it. Anyone care to copy/paste?: www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9578Functionally I'm on board the "didn't know it was even there, probably wouldn't have messed with it anyway" thing, but in principle I keep hoping that we were beyond the whole "ditching features in localization" thing, but I guess we aren't. It's not really something to "sue" over, though. It was never technically advertised as part of the US game, it was just featured in some JP oriented blogs when it was initially announced earlier in the year. Atlus' sin of more of omission rather than flat out lying.

It would be kind of cool to be able to create your own rumors, though.

Atlus' sin of more of omission rather than flat out lying. They're essentially saying that they can't go into the specifics of why it was left out but "the decision was not made lightly." Also, they said in so many words "it was not promised to the North American market so STFU." Problem is, unless you're buying it for the soundtrack or for collector's purposes they aren't really giving you much reason to go out and buy it (well, aside from the fact that it was never released in the US commercially). I haven't done the install yet, but the game loads slow as ass without it. And it's a pretty bare-bones port too.

Doesn't sound like a satisfactory explanation. While most usages of emulation are technically illegal, it should, in theory, give corporations an incentive to make any products superior to what you could download off the 'net for free. Adding extra features is a good way to do this - removing them is bitchy.
And yeah, technically it wasn't promised...but they should probably realize that a good number of their fans read import blogs like Siliconera and Andriasang, heard about it there, and assumed that it would make it in (like the OP!) Of course Atlus USA did nothing to say contrary up front. It's a no-win situation if they can't include it, but I guess they preferred to go the skeezy route by letting people buy it and find it missing than deal with a minor fan uprising beforehand and swear off purchasing it (though they likely still would buy anyway.)

We didn't really need a repeat of Yakuza 3's hostess-club revolt, anyway... =P
