Why, if no dying occurred, is it so common to represent revival spells with little cherubim? Are they just there to provide moral support/inspirational cuteness to persons who came near death?

I am reminded of this strip: (EDIT: GAH! It may be a bit hard to read with the reduced Photobucket size, so I'll just link to the page itself.) www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=176Cracks me up just thinking about it! I must agree with much that has been said so far, especially with summoning Eden in FF8. After I would accomplish my boost, I'd duck out quickly to the kitchen to get myself a drink while it was still charging up the feckin' attack.

I'm not made of inn coupons. The soft thing is funny. It's the thing no one ever buys or uses and yet you always need it

I actually bought a few on a run-through at Costa del Sol.
Anyway, Square could always say: "um, that much insta-stone(TM) needs SuperSoft for the subject to return to normal, not to mention the scars of time that could leave him a little paralised or something".

Actually, on some RPGs when a member's HPs drop to 0, the official status effect is "death."

Definately agree with the spells are not enough or too flashy now. Sure I'm all for flashy spells, that get used once or twice through out the entire game, not the obscure times and lengths of basic spells for a lot of games now.
Thought I'd bring up Suikoden (Of which I've only finished the first, the second is more expensive and difficult to get in Pal) which has magic that is resonably varied and has some obscure things like the Window maker. It also has ultimate magic when two spells are combined which is pretty ultimate and magic tends to be harder to use since to my knowledge there's no MP ups you can only restore with rest.

Carpentry magic? I suppose I could use another window in here; this fan obstructs my view.

Essentially, by the way. Couldn't necromancy technically be used as healing magic?

RPG Maker, for when all the latest RPGs just really piss you off so much you think you can do a better job than the professionals.

RPG Maker is hella fun (I much prefer 2003, due to the side view battle system) but unless you work on it day and night, it takes a LONG damn time to make anything.
Still, it does give you a greater appreaction for what went into the older 2D RPGs.

What piques me about RPGs is that each character is specialized in a particular weapon, so ever time you go to town you know exactly what to buy. One sword, one bow, one staff, one weird-ass weapon that's only in this game... at least, that is how it is now. One of the things i liked about lunar was that you would either have to buy two swords, or give one of lesser power to someone...
I like all of the useless items in games if just for the fact that it gives variety. I may not use all of these items, but it doesn't mean that they should not be in the game. If they did that, there wouldn't be enough shit in the game... or status effects (although I will be honest, when someone has a status ailment, i usually just use a restorative spell).
I am one who also hates long spell streams. I liked the summons in FF6 (only game i can relate to right now) where the spell was just cast and you would maybe see a sprite of the summon, but only very quickly. After that, the sprite was gone and you had dealt some damage.

We all hate (I assume we all do) long, excessive, unskipable and not very useful spell streams.

You should try some "western RPG" in that case, as most of those, while weaker on storyline, tend to have massive characters customisation. For example, in Baldur's Gate, you can use any weapon you like, but get to choose which weapon, if any, your character is good at using. Fallout does this as well (Fallout is VERY MUCH worth playing, for the Post Apocalyptic setting ALONE. Such a shame the franchise has gone to shit >.<)

I have both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, but I've never been able to really get through them...
And my pals keep telling me that Fallout 2 is the best RPG they have played, just in like the strategy and environment. But if you say Fallout 1 is better...
Either way those two are games that I have been trying (not very hard) to get my hands on and play through.
