I have my laptop next to me with AIM/MSN/skype. The only other thing you can use on PSN aside from a headset is the built-in chat room and inviting people to it. Basically you can see everyone's message pop up on the upper right corner and you can press the home button to get access to it, though not particularly quick given the PS3 interface. It's good if you're going to consistently chat with someone without a mic. It's a royal pain in the ass is what it is. Xbox.com is set up much better. You can just type a message out to someone and it'll hit them both on the website and on their system. They can reply at either place and it'll reach you, so you don't have to interrupt your game every 15 seconds when someone replies with "lol".

Oof. Sorry I took so long to update. It's been a busy month.
Anyhoo yeah all the stuff I was suggesting was done on a nearby PC or laptop. Failing that, if you happen to own a modern smartphone with access to your house's wireless internet, chances are there's a version of Skype you can run on it. There are also mobile versions of ebuddy and at least Android phones to my knowledge have several options for IRC clients.
There are other voice chat alternatives for smartphones but those dip into the uncomfortable territory of having to give out your phone number.

Protip: If you decide to chat via IM with someone for the purpose of gaming, make sure you don't have your real name set as your display name on your ID. I accidentally found out someone's real name on here because of that.

Well, I'm just gonna keep using my mic+keyboard. Doesn't really matter if they gots a mic, at least they'll hear what I got to say. I say a lot of dumb shit lol -_-
But you know, I'm getting decent at VF5FS and proudest moment so far: Someone after listening to my nonsense as I beat him up (I think? I may have lost, i don't remember) messaged me saying, "It's nice hearing somebody be encouraging in a competitive game for once. Stay classy bro." Yeah, that made me feel great.

Nice. Yeah, good sports seem so rare online. I was playing Soul Calibur V the other day, just messing around with Ezio to earn an Achievement. I didn't know any of his moves, so I was just button mashing as I went, not caring if I won or lost.
I beat the random guy I was up against, and he sent me an angry messaging saying "learn the moves before you go online and spam, friendgot". And people wonder why XBL has such a bad rep...

Sigh...yeah, unfortunately bitches like that are a dime a dozen. Thankfully I've found the VF community to be pretty cool.
By the way, Jason your such an achievement whore! lol. Me and a buddy bicker about the merit of achievements from time to time but I'll spare you haha.

Yeah, I figure we all have our niches. Succubus is the Tri-Ace person, kog is the resident shmup fan. I'm into Achievements. My greatest fear is that all this work won't carry over to the Xbox 720 or whatever it ends up being called, but that's a discussion for another time...
You're right about the VF5 community, at any rate. I'm really out of practice with that series, but was still able to beat random people of dan rank just by using careful timing and patience. No angry messages, no need to block voice chat on certain people. Just a bunch of people getting together and kicking one another's asses.
Good stuff.

personally still trying to get people to call it the xbox 720p60fps In any case: meh, my real name is not exactly the most well-kept of secrets. Although it's particularly difficult to google from my nickname here!

Reply to him with "mad bro?". He'll like that. ;D Had the same issues with MVC3, my first time playing so I went online using simple mode and the random guy I beat sent me many angry messages about using Deadpool's guns to build up my meter. (which I wasn't trying to do, I was just new) coincidentally, I was also called "friendgot"... I wonder why.

I like think it's from an incredible level of tolerance for the homosexual lifestyle.

Just got through a long session of VF5FS on Live. Except for this one guy who accused me of cheating, it wasn't bad at all. The game I used to play, SFIV, not so much. VF community is great.

By the by, is anyone aware of any issues with connecting to online matches in King of Fighters XIII? I keep getting a message that says I don't meet the criteria for a match.

Unless it's a new issue. You're probably trying to connect to a match with a four bar connection requirement. You can thank the last netcode patch for that.

Sons of bitches. Yeah, I noticed that everyone had that in the lobby. Seemed really weird.
