---------------------------- Greetings, Game Club. If you listened to the Wasteland podcast, you know that the first challenge of 2012 is a real doozy. The ol' 9X Randomizer selected Majō Densetsu II: Dai Ma Shikyō Galious to torment us this January. Developed by Konami and released for the Famicom on August 11, 1987, this game is often confused with its far more popular cousin Knightmare II: Maze of Galious for the MSX. But the differences are more than skin deep. Both games have essentially the same plot. While the hero, Popolon, was rescuing his lover Aphrodite in the first Knightmare game, an evil goat-wizard named Galious kidnapped the couple's apparently unattended baby. The title loosely translates to "Demon Castle Legend II: The Dark Priest Galious." This game has fewer dungeons than the MSX game, but is nonetheless larger and longer. It has completely different maps and a few different items to collect. Since this is our first non-English game, I'll be posting a few very roughly translated pages out the manual to help us get started. There's an IPS patch out there that will translate what little text is in the game. Oh yeah, did someone want more passwords? Because NES Galious has you covered! MAY THE RETRO GODS SMILE UPON US...

Ah, this isnt a totally unknown game to me after all. I recall trying this approximately two years ago (On New Years Eve.) since I was playing La-Mulana at the time, and I was told the gameplay is heavily based on this.
I'll give this one a try, but I think I wont be joining the podcast because I'd like to give someone else a change to be part of it.
Was bit nervous when doing the Wasteland podcast. The time difference wasnt the problem (although it was 4:30 AM here when we started, I didnt feel sleepy at all), but I didnt have half the notes with me, I was constantly wondering how is my English and just general worry and excitement. Still, it was fun doing that and will gladly join in for any future ones.

I always wanted to get into this game, but never had the time for it. It looks like a better MSX2-to-Famicom port than Metal Gear from what little I've played of both.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that this is called Game Club 199X, but all the games are from 198X?
Anyway, I'll probably be tackling this one. The first stage is kind of a breeze, reached the jungle before I knew it. Then things start getting convoluted...
What's the idea behind renaming Aphrodite to Venus in the manual translation?

What's the idea behind renaming Aphrodite to Venus in the manual translation? The translation patch had to use "Venus" because of ye olde space constraints. I just wanted the manual to match the game we're playing, as if it were actually localized back in 1987.

That cover-art is pretty bad ass. Very Castlevania-like. I'm actually kind of surprised at the art, I didn't think Japan got a whole lot of that Western-style generic fantasy art on their covers at the time.

Welp, I'm liking this game a good deal so far. It's not as daunting as Legacy of the Wizard, so I'm sure this one will be beatable. I would say that I like how the text isn't a Castlevania 2-esque failure of grammar translation and the hints are actually HELPFUL, but I remember that this is a fan translation I'm playing. Good job on the translation, though! To this point, I've beaten the first boss, a large skeleton dragon who's... actually pretty tough for the first big bad! I couldn't dodge its bones very easily, but getting chomped by the big head hurt badly. I actually died the instant I killed it too, forcing me to beat it again... with only like one hit left on Venus. I beat it on a second play, but having to wander through the dungeon again was a pain. This is one of THOSE types of games (old-school and unforgiving), so I feel it'll last me until the end of the month.

To its credit, most of the hints found in the red books are accurate and to the point. It's the goddamn villagers who are the liars.
