If there's one thing I don't like about this game (and I am liking it a lot so far) it's that I always feel like I'm doing something wrong. I guess I'll go back to the beginning and beat up that dummy to get whatever it is you get from it, since I feel like I need some more chain techniques anyway. Ooh shit, don't kill me don't kill me.. you only get a bunch of cure/vera bulbs, so it's not worth restarting if you've put more than an hour or so into the game (hope you didn't already). On the other hand, you'll have built up a ton of human points, which will make grinding for good armor easy after the mines; for reference, I'm in snowfly forest and have a human-killer blade at 50 while my other weapons are at about 30 to 36 at best. Has anyone mapped the snowfly forest? It definitely has a set "main" path. If I have the stomach I might try and sketch one up. Aside from it being tedious as FUCK, if you see the number of snowflies decrease when you go to the next screen, go back to the previous screen and try again. I wasted a ton of time trying the first person view to see if there were congregations of the flies or something but it's nothing that elegant. Secondly, if you find a path that is "blocked with a cloud of snowflies", remember in general where it is once you fight the dragon boss, then retrace your steps back to it. I made the mistake of going through the exit on the opposite side of the boss arena, and wound up back at the beginning eventually. On the elixirs, make sure and use them - aside from the roulette wheel they're the only thing that raises Ashley's stats. Looks like the old Dragon Quest trick works. Looks like the results are random and you get up to 4 points per elixir - save, then hope you get a 4, if not, reload, try again, save after a success. It's tedious but is pretty important especially with the magic.

Has anyone mapped the snowfly forest? It definitely has a set "main" path. Snowfly Forest isn't all that bad, really. First, it isn't a teleporter maze. The main path connects each room together directly without any teleporting whatsoever. So whenever you exit a room, open your map. If you teleported, you went the wrong way. If you didn't teleport, you're okay. There are a couple red herring paths, but as long as you use the in-game map and pay attention to where each path leads, it shouldn't take too long to navigate the forest.

I just realized I got this game from Goozex last year. I'm in.
I started it on my PS1, but it's too inconvenient. Restarting on my PS3.

Well, I ended up playing this for most of tonight- just got through that Snowfly forest- and managed to beat that pesky Mage/Knight combo. I don't know if people are as dumb as me but you defintely, definitely want to focus on that mage first- your sword of human slaying should do the trick and you will automatically be buffed up so just to single hits on him- chaining doesn't seem to affect him at all. I really need to find a forge/weapon container soon as I am now laden down with weapons and some of the new ones would be really great if I could combine them...

Cleared the game today, and started New Game+ right away. Vagrant Story isn't over until I have finished all of the bonus content!

I'm not currently playing the game but I like to keep up with this thread. Could one of the mods sticky it and remove the "Remove animated sigs" thread? Animated sigs are old hat anyway.

For people new to the game who are disappointed at the damage they do: that's how it's supposed to work initially. Don't restart the game because you still do 5 points of damage to a boss 4hrs in. Use break arts, use risk potions (it shouldn't be taboo to reach 100 risk in a boss fight, e.g. vs dragons and remember that you heal more the higher the risk) and use element guard spells on yourself when you see one of those elemental monsters. If an enemy/boss doesn't chase you around, it's a very valid strategy to move away from its attacking range, sheath your weapon (risk lowers faster in this mode) and wait for the risk to lower if you so desire. Have like 3 weapons, each specialized in killing 2 types of enemies. It's been a while since I've played the game but I recall a rule to the monster classes included in the in-game tutorial. That's a very important rule as for example if you use one weapon vs dragons and humans, those two classes might be opposite so for every few hits on a dragon/lizardman, the weapon's effectiveness against humans goes down. That's not the actual rule but it's along those lines.

One thing I like about this game is how literal the fighting system is. For instance, fighting a big monster like a dragon ... you can run up under its head and attack its belly. If you do that, it won't even try to blast you with fire or whatever else it shoots from its mouth.
Also, anyone notice the enemies attacking each other? I've seen it happen at least once.

Yes! Just got the teleportation spell from the lich in Undercity East. I didn't have much trouble with him aside from my starting the battle at half power, him draining all of my magic. Kind of like the phantoms, run away from him to stay out of his spells' range, then attack when he teleports near you.
What sucked was the harpie in the room just before him - fucking thing kept instakilling me with banish. It got easy though when I used that magic ward spell, which prevented it from working on me once.
Has anyone had luck making silver/damascus weapons or armor? I made a silver shield by a fluke by combining a bronze shield and a hagane one, but haven't been able to make any more. I found a workshop where you can combine those two though.

I have no idea why they thought giving a mook an instakill spell was a good idea, but hey, Square-Enix! I'm about where Jojo is and I'm not sure what to do next. I have a sigil that opens a door leading to the limestone quarry, but the problem is I have no idea where said door is. The only place I haven't fully explored is B2 of the abandoned mines, so I'm heading there first.

Hagane equipment is more than enough to finish the game.

Hagane equipment is more than enough to finish the game. Thanks, dude; I'll stop stressing over it now. I also noticed that the one silver piece I'd created (a tower shield) was crap stat-wise compared to a hagane version I made afterward. Go figure. I also got some damascus leggings from a random drop, but was killed less than a minute later without saving. Yeah! Most of the challenge in the game so far is coming from me not thinking. I've been bitching about not doing enough damage to the crimson blades in the central/eastern parts of the city. Turns out that I'd not improved the base damage enough when combining blades, and only had something like an 11 physical damage stat. So yeah, remember to mind that. I'm also stuck at the part Snarboo's at - I can't find the entrance to the quarry. When I get home I think I need to flip through the maps and see if there are any clues...

Hmm - I've been playing a bit more and I beat an Air Dragon after a tricksy section where you had 3 minutes and a big map to explore- killing a weird fat Earth Based genie into the bargain. Now I seem to be slightly lost- there is a lot of very powerful knights and lizardmen kicking around the place I am at so I may backtrack to see if I can find anything else in the unexplored routes I've yet to take...

Megatron: make your way to the eastern part of town from the central areas you're in (you'll go through the abandoned mines B2 first I think). In addition to two good workshops there's a dungeon where you'll fight a lich and get both the teleport spell and herakles (strength up spell) spell. After that, you're officially stuck along with the rest of us, hahaha.
Also, you and feynman need to come by the GC9x chatroom sometime.
