How many hitpoints do the phantoms have? I was doing something like 5 hp an attack, it was ridiculous. The only reason I could take out that Phantom was due to chaining a club I got just prior with a +2 affinity to Phantoms- had to chain 20+ hits at points :\

Okay, so reading the manual confirms that you can dual class a weapon. It's kind of tricky, however. When you raise a weapon's affinity towards an enemy type, the two enemy types below it may drop in level. So for example, if you level Human, both Beast and Undead might drop. Thus, the enemy types that synergize the best are: - Human and Phantom
- Beast and Dragon
- Undead and Evil
Gems can be used to modify these effects, so it pays to experiment! This means that at most, you'd need to carry 3 weapons at any given time, maybe a total of 6 if you wanted both close and long range weapons for each enemy type.

One thing about weapons: I'm pretty sure the Slash/Piece/Blunt attribute is the most important, followed by element, then by enemy class. The latter two might be switched but I'm really certain the first category is most important.

It's been something like 11 years since I played this game, but I believe that's correct. You'll see much better ranks once you get into New Game+. Also, your other issue is precisely why I hate video games. I always, always, always end up getting near the end of any game I start, then starting all the way over once I finally realize how I was SUPPOSED to be playing all along.

Okay! I think I am just about ready to call it a night- I just beat the Dragon Boss that came shortly after a big golem. On both I found that either reflecting their magic back at them or their physical attacks back at them worked a treat. Thanks to Snarboo's advice I've got a beast/dragon slaying spear and a human/phantom killing sword. If they remade this game to run smoother and with a quick weapon switch function I think I'd really enjoy it- as it stands I kinda have mixed views.

I can't believe you guys have the patience to keep playing this. I pretty much gave in already. Vagrant Story is all about the plot and characters. I can put up with almost any shitty gameplay contrivances, providing that the story and characters are interesting enough. VS is one of those games.

I might have been able to do that when I was in high school. Now the game literally puts me to sleep. If I get some daytime play in over a weekend I might push forward a bit more, but I've already determined I can't play it at night. I'll be snoozing before I hit the first savepoint. EDIT: I feel bad, because I feel like I'm being a poor sport about this. I even voted for this game. But this is not the first time I've tried this, and the only conclusion I can come to is that I simply loathe this game. Now all of you seem to be enjoying it, and I am all the more baffled. Well, in the interests of good will, I can at least say a few positive things. Assless chaps aside, I do like the art direction. Sydney's got some sort of weird steampunk cyborg arm thing going. Or maybe they're just clawed gauntlets. The low poly count makes it hard to tell. Still cool. This is a Matsuno game, developed by the FF Tactics team. I remember hearing at the time it took place in Ivalice, in the same timeline as FF Tactics and FF XII. Looking at wikipedia, apparently Matsuno's pulled a George Lucas since then, and claims he never said that. But whatever.

I got a bit further and fought another boss in a small seaside town, and now I'm heading towards the abandoned mines. My tactic for killing the dragon was just to keep smacking it in the head and try to chain as much as possible. I couldn't get the timing of its attacks down well enough to counter it, sadly. The golem was a piece of cake, though. It didn't really put up much of a fight, and I just kept smacking it in the torso with a hammer I found. I'm really enjoying this game so far. It's taken me ages to get used to the mechanics, though, and even longer to be able to chain consistently. The need to switch between multiple weapons keeps throwing my timing off, especially since every weapon has a completely different feel to it. I've dabbled a bit with the weapon crafting system, and I now have a rapier geared towards humans that I'm calling "En Garde", and a great sword called "Durandal" that is my beast and dragon slayer. I also have a spear called "Circus Maximus" because I am a huge dork. Edit:Also, your other issue is precisely why I hate video games. This is a problem I've started to notice among modern gamers: everyone always tries to powergame their way through stuff these days, either by consulting a guide or FAQ every step of the way, by savescumming encounters to beat the RNG, or by excessive min-maxing and micromanagement. As a result, people quickly grow sick of the game and learn to hate it when it's really the person's approach to the game that is the problem. This is what makes GC9X so refreshing to me. It has shown me that most games aren't meant to be powergamed, that you're not supposed to consult a guide for everything, and that you're not supposed to see everything your first time through the game. This is especially true of RPGs, many of which have post game content, or hidden items that you might not find until your second or third time through the game. There really is no wrong way to play a game like this if your strategy sees you through the entire game and you're having fun along the way.

My problem with the defense arts is that I'm instinctively hammering the circle button to try and attack before the enemy, when I should be preparing to get raped. Instead, I end up getting a "too fast" and missing my opportunity to defend. That, and I can never remember which defense art I have equipped on which button when I am actually ready to use defense arts. I suck. Here's my trick - if you see a "..." over their head, indicating that the enemy is about to attack, start running away. When you're ready, let them get close so they'll attack, then you can attempt your defense ability.

I feel as if I've been slacking off and nearly everybody's ahead of the curve at this rate, but I DID just beat the Dullahan, for what it's worth. Honestly, I was expecting it to be much worse than it was, and while it hit hard and stole my life points, the heal and degenerate spells made the fight MUCH more manageable.
Though from what I understand, the difficulty has yet to spike to exorbitant amounts. However, I... think I am liking the game so far, even if the inputs for chain and defense arts require some rather unorthodox timing that I haven't yet mastered.

Well I finally picked this game up again after giving up last time, now that I know about the affinity systems and such it's much more enjoyable. Just hit the golem boss after a couple hours of grinding through with some serious monster and human buster equips. Sadly I can't seem to beat it and it's annoying to retrace my steps with the slow ass weapon switching.

Aha got em the trick to the golem is to use an air weapon and use that...took out a dragon boss too!!

Just finished clearing Snowfly Forest. It's been a while since I last played Vagrant Story, but I still remember the path through the forest. This game is so much fun! Even if the menus can be clunky, there's something to be said for the satisfaction of being a walking arsenal of arms and armor that has equipment for every situation.
