Well, I'm done. I've played enough and even though I'm almost at the end it's too much work and not enough fun. Up to this point I think I was just fooling myself into thinking I enjoyed it more than I did. Now it's feeling as joyless as Dark Souls did towards the end.

Don't give up now, you're at the home stretch! It's worth it to see this game through just so you can say you beat one of Square's most misunderstood games.

It is done! Finished it over an hour ago- been reading a plot FAQ to try and figure out what happened in the ending The last area was actually quite easy in the end with all the gems and my weapons which were all with strength stats of high thirties/40. Most of the bosses in that area- just a matter of using the weapon type appropriate, sticking on elemental gems, buffing yourself and then wailing away on them. The first part of the final boss was super easy but man, that second form was a dick- unless I was well buffed I could barely scratch him and even then it was only really 14hp damage until the chaining stacked up! He killed me the first time with his sort of "summon magic" thing he done but the second time he went down okay (I managed to knock him out of that attack as he flew overhead with an attack once but the other times he was out of my reach so I stuck on a shield with a dark affinity gem attached- he went from insta-killing me to doing a total of 60hp damage- hah!). Over-all...I can't honestly say I completely enjoyed it or that I totally hated it. I think with the ability to quick switch weapons and the removal of block pushing puzzles I would have enjoyed it much- much more...I'd like to see a War of the Lions style remake in a lot of ways smoothing out the uglier elements of it. Anyways- finished a game I never honestly thought I would bother playing through so I'd like to thank all of you at hg101 and Game Club 199X for allowing me to do so

This game is really fascinating, but I simply can't deal with the interface and weapon juggling. I'd really appreciate a remake with the ability to cycle through weapons instantly with a button press or something. Good work to those of you that were able to get through it!

Is it just my imagination, or do bosses change weapon-type weaknesses each time you fight them? Like, I coulda sworn this dragon's head was weakest against blunt weapons the first time I checked, then I died and Analyzed again and his head was weak against piercing weapons... You know, after I went to the trouble of killing a hundred blunt-weapon carrying zombies until I got one.

Is it just my imagination, or do bosses change weapon-type weaknesses each time you fight them? That's a good question. I've noticed the generic mooks seem to be randomly weak to a different weapon type every time I enter a room, so I wouldn't be surprised if bosses are the same way. I'd almost say that's a weird feature to include in a game like this, but then again, this is Vagrant Story. After taking a break over the last few days, I've slowly been working my way through this again. Right now I'm about halfway through the Limestone Quarry. I've just defeated the Ogre Lord, who was fairly easy with the right gems equipped and buffs stacked. I was able to cast silent early on in the battle, which helped immensely while fighting him. That brings me to my biggest issue with this dungeon so far: the basic enemies you fight are far more difficult than the bosses you encounter. Most of them have a bunch of nasty abilities they like to cast on you, such as silent, which prevents you from using magic abilities. They also tend to negate any debuffs you cast on them, and they are very resistant to your chain arts. It's very tedious trying to clear this place out when most of your attacks miss or you can't cast magic because some asshole silences you. Despite these annoyances, I'm still enjoying this immensely. For once in a game I'm actually glad to be interrupted by story sequences. They're always brief, with each one slowly unraveling more of the mystery surrounding the city you're exploring, which leaves you wanting more. The cutscenes are well directed, too, so I always feel rewarded when I get to see one after I clear out a dungeon.

One of the reasons I quit was that most of the challenge comes from bullshit like status impairments, enemy immunities, and critical hits. They're not insurmountable, but dealing with each of them is a pain in the ass and takes an inordinate amount of either preparation or mopping up to deal with on top of replaying large spans of the game, and it gets tedious. Ironic, since I'm playing through a similar situation playing ME2 on Insanity, but at least I get an achievement from it.

Yeah this is true- I ended up clocking up a huge playing time due to leaving the magic recharging and risk to lower after a chain heavy battle where I had to heal and rid myself of a status post battle. Silence was the biggest offender- the only way to get rid of it was to leave a room- and if you had just been silenced prior to fighting an enemy that you absolutely needed a buff against *urgh* then you needed the very rare "cure all status ailments" item or to leave the room, go in and hope you weren't silenced or worse still- silenced and de-buffed! I'm pretty sure it was my stubborn qualities that seen me through this game- if I forced myself through something as loathesome as Silent Hill: Homecoming I figured this deserved a little more effort. There is a good game here- it's just buried under Squares inability to not be Square for even one game :\

And at the same time I'm not going to go out and say it's a bad game, but it's not a good fit for me. I enjoyed the camaraderie of working with all of you to tough it out. And I'm confident that if I put in another 5 hours or so I'd be done; maybe someday. But actually playing the game was monotonous and joyless.
Vagrant Story is like cats (or needy women). Some people fucking love them. But essentially to deal with cats you have to meet them (or Vagrant Story) on THEIR level, and deal with their bullshit all the while they're mocking you. Fuck you, I'm the human, if you think you're so great then take care of yourself.

That's actually a pretty good way of describing it.

Are the different armor and weapon sub-types of any real importance? For instance, is a Sallet always a better helmet than a Cabasset?

Finally beat the final boss this evening! This is one hell of a game. I would say more, but I think I'll save my impressions until the podcast or slightly thereafter. Are the different armor and weapon sub-types of any real importance? For instance, is a Sallet always a better helmet than a Cabasset? I have absolutely no idea how the armor progression in this game works, outside of material. I mostly look at the stats an item has to determine its value, but in theory, if you found and combined enough Cabasset's, you could build one that is better than a later piece of armor.

Dangit. I should have been keeping more of a rolling progress chart on this thread, but last week was hectic for me. However, I have beaten the game and have a lot of fuel for the upcoming podcast. I should hope this'll be the best one we've had so far, but many more adventures will soon be available! ... umm, I mean, it should be awesome.
