woohoo just barely scraped by the mage boss fight with gladiator rank!
Umm since they have such high agility its important to buff and debuff in that fight and watch out for their spells. After the fight there is a heal panel 2 rooms away from it in an isolated corner.

Just for the record, you can remove status effects with defence arts by using them vs any attack, so you can remove parallasis and numbness by using ward against a normal attack. Also, bronze + iron = h metal thats very good. There is probably some other cominations that make better stats addition metals.

GC9X now has an IRC channel! You can find it here: - Server: irc.psigenix.net
- Channel: #GC9X
I've been slowly working my way through the game, and I'm now near the end of the Snowfly Forest. Navigating the forest was a pain, as was dealing with the enemies that inhabit it, but otherwise it wasn't so bad. I was able to brute force my way through, and I even managed to defeat the earth dragon, even though it took a while to grind up my weapon's dragon affinity. However, I'm being held up by the second forest boss fight against *SPOILERS* the dark armor that one asshole mage summoned. Granted, I do have help from Sydney, which is a surprise, but the stupid mage keeps hitting with me lightning, which always annihilates me. The armor itself hasn't been an issue, and I found out you can debuff it, so I'll have to keep experimenting until I find a strategy that works. I think I am officially in love with this game. The combat system is very satisfying, and because it's not entirely real time, you have plenty of time to cook up a clever strategy. However, the chain and defense arts add a layer of skill to the game, making battles more tense and engaging than most traditional RPGs. I appreciate a game that really rewards forward thinking through clever usage of your basic abilities and spells to overcome overwhelming odds. It's going to be hard to go back to traditional RPGs after this, but I have to say I have a new found respect them after playing Vagrant Story.

Quick note on Snowfly Forest: use your map. For the longest time my friend thought he had to memorize the route for that place a-la teleporter mazes, but I had already used the map so much I was used to looking at it often and it turns out Snowfly Forest is really no different in that regard.

I reaaaaaaally like the chaining system in this game, but I despise the attack animations. They don't feel fluid, and the timing seems really off.

I reaaaaaaally like the chaining system in this game, but I despise the attack animations. They don't feel fluid, and the timing seems really off. Some of them are downright weird, like when he drags a spear across the enemy rather than stabbing ;p. I'm way behind you guys from the sounds of it. I just popped up above the surface and back under again to that place with the goblins. THEN I DIED AND LOST 20 MINUTES OF MY LIFE. That seems to be my problem - I'll skip saving for whatever reason, thinking I'll be back in a few minutes, then WHAM, dead. That being said I'm enjoying the game a lot more than I remember the first time. I agree with Snarboo about it rewarding good planning, but at times you need a lot of luck (or prior knowledge) too. I've run into two bosses so far (Golem, Wyvern 2) where the weapon blade type (blunt, edged, piercing) didn't work, and I didn't have a backup that would work (or did, but didnt' want to risk undoing the grinding I did against opposing enemy types). So yeah, keep a spare or two in your bag.

It's cool. Sotenga and I are realllly far behind. I'll be playing catch up today, that is if I can drag myself away from Cowboy Bebop.

Is anyone else making obscene names for their weapons? It's almost not worth it, you have to fuck with them/tinker with them so often it's kind of a pain to change the name too. The cleanest of my weapon names right now is a greatsword called Overcompensation.

What's your verdict, Joestar: Better / worse than Peace Walker?

Trick question, it's not a metal gear game . Although IIRC that's what caused a lot of the haters to be haters back when it came out - a couple of college friends were pissed because someone told them it was like MGS, and they weren't fans of RPGs. I also remember Somethingawful bitching about that too. The cinemas are about the only similarity (which is one of the things I love about the game, I love well-done realtime cinemas). Story wise? This wins, but mostly because it doesn't dig up my favorite female character in a video game ever, retcon in a straight-curious lover for her, piss in her mouth, then re-bury the corpse upside down. Overall there's a lot of shit for me to bitch about in Vagrant Story but it's mostly cosmetic stuff like how silly Ashley looks. It's still a really good game - just not a really good game to play when you're depressed and stressed, as my lack of progress shows. Same goes for watching TV while playing it - not a good idea. You need all the focus you can get in order to pull off chains, etc.

Snowfly Forest has been conquered! Thanks to 9inchsamurai's tip, navigating it a second time was easy. After grinding in the city by defeating the respawning guards for a bit, I was able to defeat the mage too, given he was a human enemy type. I also tinkered around in the workshop while I was there to improve my armor and weapons. I finally have the timing down on the chains! Here's the trick for those of you struggling with this: the timing on the chains depends on which chain art you use. So, for example, if you use the Gain Life chain art, you will always perform the exact same move with the exact same timing. The timing on stronger chain arts, such as the paralyze art, are generally much stricter or weirder than the weaker ones. It varies from weapon to weapon, too, but once I figured this out, I was able to maximize my chains by practicing each art and getting the timing down. There's a trick to see what an enemy is weak to. First, cast the analyze spell on a target. Some enemies are resistant to it, which is shown by the percent chance it has of hitting before you cast the spell. Once you've successfully analyzed the enemy, the next step is to go into the triangle menu, select the Status submenu, then hit L1 or R1 to cycle through the enemies on the field. The analyze spell confused the hell out of me at first until susanismyalias told me how it worked. From there, you can see its health, what type of enemy you are fighting, which affinities the enemy is weak to, and which weapon types (blunt, edge or piercing) it's resistant to.

Cool, I wasn't sure what Analyze did, lol. My main problem though is not going in prepared, and then having to re-fight the boss after figuring out its weakness. This will help though!

Well, after a massive failure on pSX's part that caused the game to freeze, I had to start over using ePSXe. Thankfully, I've made up for what I lost and then some and just beat the Golem. Advance advice for the Golem: Bring a blunt weapon and make sure you get its PP up before the fight, or you're going to be in it for the long haul. Dude takes a lot of damage but doesn't deal too much of it... that is, as long as you don't walk too far away from it. Trust me, just stay close to the jerk.
