I would like to give Mother (the original Earthbound) a chance. I heard that although it's an NES RPG (and a lot of those games have been heavily criticized for not aging well), at least it's not as grind-happy as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

From what I've played of Mother, there is as much grinding required as in FF or most of DQ2- none. It's a very good game, I prefer it to Mother 2 and 3.

DQ Grinding was odd, as you weren't really level grinding, you were _money_ grinding. The level gains were a side effect.

For the first game that's very true. Gold is not so important in the second game since you can find a lot of great equipment for free.
