Don't count on it. There are hardly any PCE translations and much less for mega obscure games like these.

Jonny, I can confirm it is a sequel to Aurail. The credits call the game "Aurail 2 Scenario Blood Gear". I know about that, but it looks nothing like it and the system is completely different. Perhaps it started development as an Aurail port, much like Riot Zone and all those Monster World remakes on the PCE, and then evolved into something else.

I have this game and always enjoyed its cutscenes. The language barrier always frustrated me though.

Part of the reason why most PC Engine games don't get fan-translations is because most of them were released on CD-ROM and featured extensive voice-acting, so there's a bit more effort involved in localizing them than simply replacing the text (which is no small feat by itself). Even if you manage to gather a small group of amateur voice actors to dub the game, I imagine you would also have to reprogram the game's code to properly lip-synch all the voices.

And if youtube video walkthroughs are any indication, it's best if the voice acting is left in the original Japanese.

How many fan-dubbed versions of games have ever been attempted? The only one I'm aware of is the Spanish fandub of Time Crisis, which has some pretty decent voice acting.

It's a Westone game [...] a sequel to Aurail, an arcade game they published with Sega. If it's a sequel to Aurail, that must mean it's too difficult to pass the first level. It's weird to see a 'realistic' mecha game with such colorful graphics. Looks pretty good overall, though.

Really? I only played Aurail once on MAME and I had no problem getting to the third stage on my first credit.

Really? I only played Aurail once on MAME and I had no problem getting to the third stage on my first credit. Let me just say, ARGH! There's a lot to that game that just simply isn't intuitive to me. It took me at least 3 days of playing it nonstop to find out I could pivot. But I do see it as a great game, and I love playing it in spite of the difficulty. That being said, I'm going to check the DIP switches and see if there's an easier difficulty level....

I feel like they should just make translation patches for them anyway and just not bother with the cut scenes/voice acting, and just put the translated scripts in a text document where people can just read them. It'd be a small bother to put up with than not being able to play the games in English at all imo. I didn't mind when the people who translated Ys 4 for PCE CD did that (don't know if they ended up dubbing the game since then).

Why on earth would fan translation groups be expected to redub the voiced dialogue instead of adding subtitles to the videos or putting the translation in a text file which is what they're already doing? Do PCE games tend to have voice work playing in-game (ie. not in animated cutscenes) without accompanying text?

Do PCE games tend to have voice work playing in-game (ie. not in animated cutscenes) without accompanying text? Bingo. There are few PCE games that offer captions during spoken dialogue, but they're far and few between.

I stand corrected then. Though fan translation groups like to bog themselves down with fashion over function mentalities.

Oh hey, Blood Gear. I picked that up on a trip to Japan. I actually didn't care for it when I tried it out, since the controls seemed a bit slow and there was so much talking.
One thing that I liked: you start the game off as some security soldier in a robot, and you think that he'll be the main character...until he's destroyed by the game's villain. Then the real hero steps in. It's not a bad little fake-out.
You know, I want to play it again now that I know it's a Westone game, but I must've sold it off during one of my big collection purges. Whoops.

Jonny, I can confirm it is a sequel to Aurail. The credits call the game "Aurail 2 Scenario Blood Gear". I recently conducted an interview with one of the founders of Westone (it's not officially up but check out the Wonder Boy article). I asked him about the connection, and he said that it was probably a joke from the younger staff members who worked on Blood Gear, so there's not really much of a connection outside of both featuring mechs. He also said it was a really geeky question and was very amused that anyone outside of Japan was familiar with these games.
