There's an obscure indie FPS called "Pencil Whipped" that would really benefit from a full-fledged remake - the whole "paper-based" artstyle is interesting enough, but it suffers from muddy textures and unpleasant interface. Hey, I remember EGM giving a shout out to that game once.

The Guardian Legend - I also think this one has lots of potential. Rehauled 2-D graphics and music. Add more enemies and bosses that aren't mere palette swaps.
Tobal 1 & 2. Could really use the graphical update, expanded endings.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow/Akatsuki no Minuet (Minuet of the Scarlet Moon?) - They could really refresh a lot of the graphics on a bigger scale, better sound quality for that fabulous music. And put in an extra scenario for Julius Belmont and what happened during 1999.
Xenogears - It could use some polish. Really clean up and finalize this game.
Vagrant Story - oh man, the graphics have not aged well. The fighting and upgrading could use more balance.
Konami Wai Wai World - Konami Man and Konami Lady have to save Mikey, Simon Belmont, King Kong, Moai head, Goemon, and Fuma. Then fly the Vic Viper and Twin Bee (in 2-player simultaneous play) to save the world!
Police 911/The Keisatsukan - lord knows, the technology exists to make a home port of this arcade game.

And put in an extra scenario for Julius Belmont and what happened during 1999. Dawn of Sorrow is almost a remake of Aria of Sorrow given the similarities and because of that I think Aria is fine, it's graphics are nostalgic to me and if you redid them it would just feel like Dawn. Higher quality music is intriguing though, but even then the original music has a nostalgic charm to me.

It's just that I'd prefer a warmer, more natural sound quality for something to listen to in the car, while driving through morning traffic. In that sense, Aria of Sorrow had so many brilliant musical tracks that I prefer it overall to the compositions in Dawn of Sorrow. In some ways, I think a lot of metroidvanias that were released on Gameboy Advance and DS would really benefit with the kind of resolution and detail that was given to Symphony of the Night. Even moreso, with today's jump to 4K resolution.

Personally I'd love to see Silicon Studio tackle Final Fantasy 6, those Bravely Default assets would be great for a remake of that game. Chrono Trigger by Tokyo RPG Factory would also be a no brainer since I Am Setsuna is its spiritual successor. Streets Of Rage by Wayforward, they've already shown that they can pull off a classic beat em up with ease.

It's nice that The World Ends With You got the HD Remix, but I really want to see that combined with the old dual-screen gameplay somehow. Perhaps there is still hope with the Switch.

Oh man. Ok I know I'm replying to something from 2006 but bear with me.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. I absolutely adored that game, and I am so disappointed that the franchise went from a solid grimdark Zelda clone to a beatemup.

I'm 100% on board with the idea of a Guardian Legend remake, both 2D and 3D. There are two Capcom properties that I'd like to see remade: Demon's Crest and Sweet Home. I know that SH was somewhat the progenitor of Resident Evil, but I'd like to see a purely supernatural game, just with evil spirits and the like, no zombies, labs or evil science.

An updated Demon's Crest would rock. It's the kind of game where you wish there were just more and more levels to explore. Sweet Home particularly would do great with a refresh on the gameplay side. If they could just rework the tediousness of having to switch off characters to use their individual skill. Otherwise, the graphical creepiness and the mood of music manages to hold up well.

Streets Of Rage by Wayforward, they've already shown that they can pull off a classic beat em up with ease. In this case they'll have pretty 'big shoes to fill'--smallest mistake and fans would go 'monkeys'.

Honestly my first reaction when I read 8 Bit Dreams' post was "if they remake SoR with DD Neon's terrible art I'll jump out a window". I'd much rather they left it alone. The people who made these games are unlikely to make another, and no other team will do it quite right. If they want to make a SoR-inspired beat-'em-up, sure. But what's the need for a totally different game to be called "Streets of Rage" anyway?

Actually that was the case with Contra 4 as well,it wasn't that bad per se,but it had traces of a 'fangame' in places imo. And that grappling hook 'thing'--i'm not sure it was that necessary, for a flow/immersion breaking maybe

Wizardry and Darklands deserve a remake too imo. Even a graphical update will do.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a reboot of the IP than a direct remake, but Full Throttle would be perfect for a revival.
Driving the hot rod around in Brutal Legend gave me a Full Throttle vibe, I picture a modern Full Throttle being an open world action game but maybe with puzzle solving elements, perhaps that could be what Double Fine does next after Psychonauts 2?
