Well, they're out - I just picked up the collection on Xbox Live, which is a great deal (10 dollars for three games plus some bonus material, as opposed to paying 5 each for PSN, or whatever inflated price Nintendo charges for shit).
I haven't played the arcade ROM for Monster Land, but it looks like they've made at least one change from what Xerxes and Gunheart have mentioned - when you continue, you get to keep the hearts you've earned. Still, it's a HELL of a lot harder than the SMS version - some of the enemies shoot "homing" shots (the crabs and their bubbles), and other enemies will do more than run back and forth - the ghosts will stray from their path to get you, making it hard to hit them, and the myconids climb stairs.
I need to see the original arcade version to see how or if the translation has changed - the "1 coin get" is amusing.

$10 for Monster Land, Monster World III and Monster World IV as opposed to 900 Wii Points for Monster World IV alone?
Now I feel really burned by the whole Wii Shop Channel system (even if I didn't buy it yet due to the stupid points system)...though I'm still wondering why the XBLA and PSN compilations omit WB3: Dragon's Trap. It doesn't make sense at all to me.

It's probably because the other Sega Vintage Collection games have three games, so they wanted to keep it consistent (although I would have loved to see the Golden Axe collection have the three and Revenge of Death Adder)

BTW, not sure if the other versions have this, but the XBL version lets you switch between the different ROMs for the games and play the Japanese and Euro versions. In the Alex Kidd collection, that even includes the Master System II version (where Alex eats/collects hamburgers instead of onigiri). There's also a really distracting scanline option.

I got MW4 on PSN. I really cannot comprehend why this game wasn't localized for the Genesis. Did they really think it wouldn't do well?
I get a serious Great Cave Offensive vibe from this game for some reason. It's got a very similar sort of aesthetic to Kirby Super Star.

There's something I don't quite understand...when I originally wrote the Wonder Boy article, there was only a Japanese version of the arcade Monster Land game. But there's a bootleg where the game is in English? Where did this come from? Who made it? English ROM hacks of arcade games are something I've barely ever seen. Plus, the European computer versions are all based of the arcade game, which was never officially released over there to begin with? But I have heard people comment that they remember playing it in the arcades, so they must've been playing the bootleg.
Further weirdness - I haven't confirmed it, but posters over at NeoGAF are saying that the translation for Monster Land arcade here is identical to the European computer versions. Maybe they actually had translated it all those years ago and just never released it?
If that's the case, I'm almost thinking the same thing happened to Monster World IV - it was translated and reprogrammed, but for whatever marketplace reasons, it just never came out, so the ROM's just been sitting around. It's just because it's so damn weird that Sega would go through the effort to localize such a relatively obscure game nearly twenty years later - outside of ports, I can't recall any instance where they actually translated an old ROM outside of some text in Sin & Punishment, which also already may have been done years before.

I think it probably has to do with the fact that the majority of the legwork has already been done for them. M2's emulation for the PS2 version of Monster World Complete is really excellent, and all they've really needed to do is produce a new frontend, patch in the translations (or simply clean up the already translated ROM, if it exists) where appropriate and update it for higher resolutions. (The game looks fantastic, by the way.)

I've only seen bits of the fan translation for MW4 through video, but it seems to me to be kind of lacking. When I played the Japanese version, several of the bosses had fairly long introduction text, while the English fan translation seemed to change it to something much shorter, like "Ha ha ha!" when the Japanese text seemed to be saying a lot more. I don't know any Japanese so maybe it just takes a whole lot of lines to write out "You're going to perish now" or whatever but the original seemed to be significantly heftier on that front.

But if it is new, then who commissioned the new translation, and why? ROM hacks by professional developers are exceedingly rare because the skills involved are not ones typically found in modern game developers. Granted, if there's any company that could do it, it IS M2, because they are emulation wizards is the way no one else is, since it requires a profound knowledge of old CPU assembly languages, but it's still a lot of effort for a game that doesn't have a lot of name recognition. As for fan translation differences, there is one pretty major one that I know of... In the fan trans, the genie at the end says "This is the end of the Monster World series". In the original Japanese (and the new translation) it says "This is the end of the Monster World series...for now."
Someone on NeoGAF had a theory that this was released since the developers were working on a new Monster World game, and had snuck that into this release as a teaser...but I went back to the Japanese version and confirmed it was there too. Who knows why it was left out of the fan translation.

DeJap also managed to turn "Bring me something good" into "Everybody here hates you", so I wouldn't put much stock into any changes they make at all.
