I like how Activision's logo dwarfs Sega's.

WHAT IS THIS?! It would have been cool if Sega had included that on the XBLA Monster World collection as one of the backgrounds, just for the lulz. Those, and the horrifying "baby Wonderboy" title screens while they're at it . I've been playing the arcade version of Monster Land and damn, I hate the bosses, or at least some of them. I'm not a fan of the different patterns - some of the bosses that were really super easy to exploit like the Grim Reapers are now at least a tiny bit tricky, and other bosses that were relatively reasonable take an enormous amount of hits to kill, like the "Congs". Anyway, for those still playing it, here's a Protip (which I found by accident before noticing it's in the "manual" for the XBLA, so it's still legal if you're trying this the "honest" way) - although gold caches are fewer and farther between in the arcade version, when you jump up to activate them, wiggle the joystick back and forth and shoot magic if you have it - this will increase the chance of a large gold drop (60+ gold) popping up.

Just looked at that Monster Land Amiga/Atari ST title screen on MobyGames. Eeeugh...
Also, I may have said this already, but LONG LIVE THE WAGGLE BUTTON. M2 should be congratulated for including that. I honestly didn't want to break the 360 controller's analog even more than it is (little brother, you know)

What's the waggle button? It's a button whose sole purpose is to replicate a joystick being waggled left and right at a rapid pace; the reason they included it being Monster Land's hidden gold, as waggling the joystick apparently gives you more gold (the first hidden gold you find, for example, instead of giving you 2 gold, can instead give you 66), and since it's a necessary technique, that's why they included it (and because they knew people would be breaking their controllers doing that) And you can map it to any button, so it's great (I map it to the right trigger as it's more comfortable) EDIT: Man, couldn't M2 include that on the Virtual Console Arcade release too?

I'm up to part 3 of the Ice Pyramid in MW4. The difficulty ramps way the fuck up here. I was only able to get to the first section in Japanese, and it pretty much requires you to speak the language to do any of the puzzles, so finally getting this in English is a godsend.

I got through the whole game in Japanese without knowing the language. I do know katakana and hiragana characters, though, so if there was an English word represented in katakana or a little bit of hiragana I could memorize, I kept that in mind for the trial and error. It was a minor annoyance, but I've always been able to clear the Sphinx parts in Monster World games in Japanese with a little patience.

Just found out that the Virtual Console Arcade version of Monster Land actually has the waggle button.

I had to look this up on Wikipedia because this struck me as very weird, but it's true - in Japan, Monster World III (Wonder Boy in Monster World for the Genesis) was released before Monster World II (the Game Gear version of The Dragon's Trap). The Master System version of Dragon's Trap was never released in Japan, so the first version actually released was the PC Engine one under the title Adventure Island, which Sega gamers may not have played.

I'd heard something to that effect before, but I'd forgotten it... I'd sold my US copy of it to a Japanese fellow in the late 90's along with my Atari 7800 and some other stuff, he was trying to get unreleased stuff for his shop in Japan. That's kind of nuts though to think that it didn't get released there.
BTW, speaking of nuts, I'm going nuts waiting for the podcast...I'm curious to see how retarded I sound, I swear, the most intelligent thing I said was the "blooper reel" schtick.

Oh, and some folks at the SMSPower forums translated some of the interviews in the Sega Ages booklet. I'm going to see about getting the rest of them translated to: www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=44826As far as I can tell (I have to view the site on my phone at the moment), the final post was not translated, so here's what I can make out. It's by Shinichi Sakamoto, one of the main composers for Westone. His first game was Monster Land, and he complains about the weak PSG synth of the arcade system. He was initially confused about the design of the game, since gathering gold and other RPG elements were unusual for an arcade game. His favorite game on the compilation of Monster World II (AKA WB3: The Dragon's Trap). It was composed with the FM synth in mind, but since the game was only released overseas (where the FM unit was unavailable) and domestically only on the Game Gear (which also did not support it) it was not possible to (officially) hear it until this compilation. (Of course it was available via emulation or hardware hacks, but these are not mentioned.)
