Crap. I missed the spoiler-covered text. Apologies. :x
Hmm... not sure what I can offer that hasn't been said already. I'll just throw out a general tip to avoid those gray grim reapers in later levels. They take way too many hits and they yoink a bit of your money if they hit you.
Also also: So far I can tell, money is completely worthless in the last level. I'd recommend just running by most of the enemies you can, though they'll occasionally drop hearts if you're in need of some more health, most of which will likely be lost to the hourglass ticking down.

Are the Blue Ghosts (GOST) actually invincible? The manual lists a score for killing them.

Are the Blue Ghosts (GOST) actually invincible? The manual lists a score for killing them. They might be susceptible to magic, haven't tried yet. Speaking of which, don't be afraid to buy magic now and again! The fireballs in particularly are very useful given they home in on enemies, although the bombs aren't half bad either. I don't recommend buying the tornadoes, though, they're a little fiddly. Edit:Here's some of the path through the Dragon's Castle: Head Right then Down-Right, Right then Down, Right, Left then Down, Hold Right immediately, Right then Down, Hold Right immediately again, Right then Up, then move to the right as soon as you enter the screen and then jump left immediately, then hop from platform to platform as they rise...
...and then I died. :/ If you fail that last bit, you have to start the maze over again.

I hope no ones been using save states :V No, but I've been tempted to, if anything to save the time it takes to get through the first 5 or 6 levels. I've taken a break and started playing Dragon's Trap. Man, I hate the juggling the enemy can do on you - thankfully you don't take additional damage while in the air, but it's annoying because it prevents you from attacking and moving, and can dump you right back in the path of danger. One thing I was wonder ing - can you revert to your earlier forms? There are some places I missed going to when I was mouse man, and now that I'm Piranha man I seem to be SOL.

Played some Monster Land today, and it feels very gamey, with all this obtuse hidden shenanigans. Makes me think of Tower of Druaga, although infinitely more fun and diverse. I'm pretty certain I'm not going to finish it though. Reached Level 4 and I was really struggling. I'm surprisingly terrible at this game!

Yeah, the first few times you play this game you'll probably have no idea what you're doing. I died pretty quickly the first two or so times I played, but you slowly pick up on the game's quirks and get further and further each time until you beat it. I'm actually surprised by how arcade-y this game is. I was expecting something more like Wonder Boy in Monster World, but I have to say the short length really works in its favor overall. Something I forget to mention in a previous post is that I find it amusing that Tom-Tom politely knocks on every door before entering, even if it has a boss on the other side. I also laughed when I found out that the wizard's name is Mr. Wizard.

There are a few rooms which have all these weird blue and pink blocks and an orange platform which allows you to morph into any of your previous forms each time you jump on it. You'll find one such platform if you manage to traverse the right side of the desert over all the lava pits (for which you'll need the Dragon Armor to survive the really big one, though I believe that's been said already). At the end of that stretch is where you get the Thunder Saber, which allows you to demolish solid blocks (even if you don't have it equipped!) Once you have that Thunder Saber, you can trigger an easily-reachable change room; just go to the non-windowed door at the left of the password church, break the only block you can reach in that room, and it gives you a question mark icon which reveals the door to the change room. I have a Dragon's Trap/Curse question myself: Has anyone found any more heart containers? There's this easy-to-reach one in the beginning where you simply go to a door in town and reach a treasure chest at the end, but that's the ONLY one I've found so far. It's getting kind of hard to survive with a mere two hearts in tow. :/

I completed Dragon's Trap/Curse on the Game Gear... Must be 15 years ago. I distinctly remember finding a sword that, when you held it, and pushed up, or jumped and pushed up, or something along those lines, it allowed you to transform into the next form. Is this real? Am I imagining it?

Maybe it's frowned upon for this Game Club thing, so disregard if you want, but Monster Land has a continue code. I don't know if it's in every version (I only know Bikkuriman World for certain), but you just hold down the action button and press Start/Run on the Game Over screen or something like that (basically the Super Mario Bros. continue code). Maybe it's cheating to some, but if it's only saving me busywork, I don't really care. Might even be detrimental to the player compared to starting from the beginning since I don't recall exactly what carries over (your armor and such does at least).

It's in the PC-Engine version but not, apparently, the SMS version. Not sure if a continue code exists at all in that one. Which is the ultimate WTF moment for me.

Well, that last Dungeon is beyond a bitch. Everything up until that point manages to largely avoid feeling too dated or unfair. But not that final run everything about it is awful (but clever in a dickish way). Firstly if you don't have the bell you're instantly screwed (or a map but we're playing it real) so the gem is essentially a false choice until you actually have a map. Then it throws in several enemies that are tricky to avoid and take awhile to kill, gives you no realistic chance for health back, no way to get time back and it introduces a new mechanic in the cheapest way imaginable - at a point where you're guaranteed to fail it (and might still screw it up even if you know what to do) and then have to repeat most of the level going through most of the enemies again. And now I'll have to go through again, I'm assuming the boss is deadly as well given that he has an item that makes him weaker. While I appreciate the gem choice means that a player who's struggling with the boss can map out the dungeon THEN fight the boss it's still a balltastically lame final dungeon. Additional Final Dungeon map After you get on the alternating raising platform, just keep going all the way to the top - you never need to get off it - once there I believe LEFT is the correct direction to go, I died after not getting the bell to ring on either right exit.

Alright, for this month's GC9X, I've decided to do something a little different: on Saturday May 12th at 9 PM Eastern Standard Time, I'm going to do a live stream of both Wonder Boy games, as well as a few other related games if I have time. The Wonder Boy games are a perfect fit for streaming given they're both fast paced and nice to look at. You'll also get to see me fumble around with these games in real time! I'll post a link to my Livestream page the night before the stream goes live. Feel free to join us on the IRC or on the Livestream chat! I'll try to answer any questions you guys might have. I'll probably have a couple hosts along with me for the ride, too. Edit:Even further dungeon map: After climbing the alternating steps, go Left, then Top Left, Left, Left, Down then hold Right immediately, Down, Fall Down all the way then head Right, Right then Down, Fall Down all the way, Left, then enter the door.
After that the final boss killed me. I recommend taking the ruby now that we have a map for the dungeon.
