Fed up with replaying the first four rounds of the SMS Monster Land, I switched to Bikkuriman World for PCE. A few notes on this one:
1. There seem to be fewer hidden coins, but most of the big secret stashes in the SMS game are also here.
2. The bosses and regular enemies are harder, sometimes MUCH harder.
3. Power-ups are more common. Or perhaps it only seems that way because the game actually tells you when you got one.
4. The continue code brings you back to the beginning of the world. You keep all the gold/items you collected up to the moment you died. Quite handy, but again, the enemies are often harder. So it's still plenty frustrating.

Bikkuriman World is harder than the Master System version? That's a relief. Now I don't think I suck quite as much, haha.

I was going to play a bit of Dragon's Curse to see what the differences were there. Anyone play the arcade version of Wonder Boy II yet? Also, I'm kicking myself for not getting a copy of the Monster World collection for PS2.

The Monster World collection is great. Tons of versions and options. It's just a shame that it only has the versions published by Sega (for obvious reasons, but still).

If you wanted to, you could keep dying on purpose, collecting more and more money to buy all the best equipment right away. It'd take a while, but it's doable. Also, do enemies drop potions in the SMS version? Because an enemy dropped one for me just now. YOINK!

The Mudmen drop potions (and I think the Octopus can as well) not really sure who else.
Apparently the Arcade game is quite different (harder I believe) again from the SMS Version, what a mess.

I got to level 8 I think, then a pig killed me dead. Or was it level 9? Fucking pig. Die, pig.
I am so tempted to use savestates right now, it's not funny...at least to pick up at say, level 6 instead of spending a half hour at a time just to die. Ugh. Think 1988 thoughts, think 1988 thoughts.

Since your HP (i.e., heart containers) is determined by your score, continuing sets you back to the minimum amount because your score resets to zero. It's still better to beat the game in one fell swoop if you can.

I have no desire whatsoever to touch Monster Land, thanks to that maze in the last level.
I've tried to play WB3/Dragon's Curse on many, many occasions, but I just can't seem to stay interested very long.

Also, do enemies drop potions in the SMS version? Because an enemy dropped one for me just now. YOINK! They do indeed. During my last playthrough, a crab dropped one, which came in really handy because I was far enough in the game that magic shops no longer appeared. Speaking of which, this is the third time I've nearly beaten this game only to be wiped out right at the end. Admittedly, I broke the one golden rule of GC9X: I used a savestate right outside of the dragon's door. However, even with cheating, I was not able to beat the dragon. I simply didn't have enough health, and even having the best armor in the game and the fricken' ruby wasn't enough. This fight is simply not doable unless you either are at full health or come into the fight with thunder flashes. The former is close to impossible, but fortunately Mr. Wizard drops 10 thunder flashes. I'm honestly considering just dumping this game in favor of Dragon's Curse, but I've managed to beat every other game we've played for GC9X so far, so I think I can do this. Hopefully without cheating this time. Fake Edit: What the hell, I tried posting this and I was suddenly taken to a forum for sourdough bakers that said this forum didn't exist. :|

A couple updates. Bikkuriman World only has eleven rounds. The last castle works the same way, but the path through the maze must be different...
If can get there again, and get to the end, I'll try to make a note of how I got there.

This fight is simply not doable unless you either are at full health or come into the fight with thunder flashes. The former is close to impossible, but fortunately Mr. Wizard drops 10 thunder flashes. I've finished the game a few times now, and have become quite good at killing the final boss. It's entirely possible to beat using only sword attacks! The first form of the dragon is very simple: it jumps in the air and shoots fire at your location. Stand fairly close to the dragon, and just before he shoots fire at you, start walking to the left. The fire will miss you completely, and you should still be fairly close to the dragon when he lands. You should have enough time to hit the dragon twice before he attacks again. Once the dragon is all the way on the right side of the screen, he will drop to the left instead of straight down, so be prepared to move a bit further than normal after you back the dragon into the corner. Just repeat this pattern and you should be able to defeat the first form easily without taking a single hit. The second form is more difficult, but basically the same. Now the dragon will stand on the ground and shoot fire at you, then jump in the air and attack just like the first form. You again want to be standing fairly close to the dragon. With good timing you can jump over the ground attack and hit the dragon before you land, then hit him again. At this point the dragon will use his jump attack, which you can avoid simply by moving back to the left. Repeat this pattern and the dragon will be defeated very quickly.
