Some Wonder Boy Fan ArtEnjoy, Tom Tom from Wonder Boy Arcade, basically the only Wonder Boy fan art that was easy to find.

Well, I tried. I really, really tried Monster Land, SMS version. I got to round 6, grabbed as much of the hidden money as I can, and... well, things didn't work out. This is yet another game where you have to scour every inch of the game for anything, or you end up, well, Sierra'd out of winning.
But I really, really want to enijoy Monster World 4, because just LOOKING at it feels like such a major step beyond any of the Wonder Boy games. Well, 'Wonder Boy' isn't actually in the title, because you're playing as a new female character, and there's a vaguely Arabian Nights theme in there.
I wanted to get further than I did, because the game looked great and played pretty well from what I saw. But I was apparently missing some item I needed to progress further, and I had no idea where to find it, and I didn't want to scour the 15 screens from the starting village and where I got stuck.
Shantae was pretty interesting, too, and I'd say it's more of a modernized version of the basic concept of Monster Land. Unforunately, I ended up getting lost because I had no real direction on where to go, but maybe I'll give it another shot sometime.
Oh, and

Hey Bob, I take offense to saying IV is leagues better than the Wonder Boy titles. Mostly because Monster World on the GEN is much more like IV than it is to Land (some even consider it superior to IV because it's a tad more freeform). Also Lair is a completely different game :V
Wonder Boy, the ultimate trolling you all the time series.

Didn't a few of the later Adventure Island games play more like the Monster World games?

Didn't a few of the later Adventure Island games play more like the Monster World games? Super Adventure Island 2 definitely did (and is one of the better games on the SNES overall). And of course, from the "Funny thing, that..." file, the Japanese title of Dragon's Curse was... "Adventure Island".

I've finally beaten Monster Land! I needed a full stock of magic and lots of luck to do it, but I did. Even then, the dragon almost killed me. Now onto Dragon's Trap.

I have a Dragon's Trap/Curse question myself: Has anyone found any more heart containers? There's this easy-to-reach one in the beginning where you simply go to a door in town and reach a treasure chest at the end, but that's the ONLY one I've found so far. It's getting kind of hard to survive with a mere two hearts in tow. :/ Well, here's one for you: instead of jumping down the well to enter the pyramid in the desert, climb over the pyramid; there's a sphinx on the other side with a heart container. Watch out, there's a spear chucking orc that can kill your fast.

I got a MAME version of monster land and it is much nicer. The controls feel a bit tighter, the graphics are higher-resolution (which makes aiming easier although still difficult), there's more music, AND I CAN USE CONTINUES.
Glorious, glorious find, it is.

Waaaay back in the day, a friend of mine beat the arcade Monster Land during lunch hour on ONE CREDIT. Needless to say, our lunch basically consisted of a bag of chips since we had to rush back to school after he beat it. I don't remember if we made it in time.
We were both about 11 years old. He wasn't that good in school, but he was a damn good video gamer.

I'm gonna wait until I can get the US Virtual Console Arcade version since it's a proper English translation to try it out.
I'd play it on the Monster World Collection instead (or just get the Master System version on VC), but since it's in Japanese and I can't understand anything I'd rather just wait until the VCA version's dumped.

Watch out, there's a spear chucking orc that can kill your fast. It's not a heart container, but right before you get to the pyramid, drop down one of the ant-lion holes and swim all the way to the left. THere's a treasure chest with tons of cash and magic AND a spare potion. I had two on me when I beat that sumbitch dragon in the pyramid.

Didn't a few of the later Adventure Island games play more like the Monster World games? Super Adventure Island 2 definitely did (and is one of the better games on the SNES overall). Adventure Island IV for the Famicom (incidentally the final official game for the platform) was an action RPG as well. Those two were the only games in the series to use the Monster World system. True, but it doesn't have the extra stages and enemy characters that were added the Master System version. I actually prefer the music in the Master System version (at least, when played on an FM module).

What stages are extra in the SMS version?

I don't exactly remember which one (it was just one stage after looking it up), but the Medusa (the Round 8 boss in the SMS version) wasn't in the arcade version.
EDIT: It was definitely Round 8 (which had a wizard sub-boss as well). I wasn't too sure before, but now I know.
