I'm resurrecting this thread of mine because, now working on another article, it occurs to me that a lot of interesting or worthwhile reviews and articles from old magazines are almost impossible to find. However, chances are someone somewhere has that specific issue. What does everyone think of using this thread as a place to request scans, or post scans of interest? I recall InsertCredit doing something similar years ago, and we ended up with some amazing scans (mostly courtesy of a poster named Cycle). Many of us have Flickr accounts, or blog/web space, so getting them online should be easy. Plus if you have a hi-res camera, you don't even need to scan them. You can just photograph them. If anyone provides scans for articles on HG101, please let me know how you want to be credited. Any EGM, GameFAN (old) or GamePro collectors on here? There's a Silpheed article in the works, and I'm trying out an idea: including as many magazine scans as possible for each game covered in an article. I've got 4 magazine scans for the DOS release, and some Japanese scans for the SCD release, but not much else. Oh, I've also got EDGE magazine's coverage of it, but I really want EGM, GameFAN and GamePro too. Went Googling but couldn't find much. Reviews: GameFan September 1993 EGM October 1993 Gamepro December 1993 No idea which issue of EGM the BIG preview would be in. Anyone able to get scans/photos? Full credit will be given. Scans pertaining to the PS2 release would also be OK, but given how recent it was there's probably no need for 360 magazine scans. I want the scans to help define the context of the era.

I remember Silpheed for Sega CD being featured in one of those "best of the year" retrospectives in a magazine, probably Diehard Gamefan.

I'll see if I still have mine, although I got rid of a lot of my old mags.

Here's the pages from EGM 51 thanks to those glorious bastards at RetroMags. I'll upload the GamePro ones here in a minute and edit this post. RetroMags is pretty much one of the greatest websites on the internet and it's a damn shame that they never really got the support they needed. edit - GamePro. Again, all credit to RetroMags. Wish I knew who the scanner/editor was.

Fantastic, thank you Roushi for the scans, and Starscream for the links. That is excellent. Mainly I just want reviews, to give context to statements like "It was compared to Starfox". Ads are surprisingly easy to find online, but reviews and previews not so much. Which I find strange, because there is sometimes more value in reviews than ads. RetroMags has/had a lot, but when I check their site they said downloads were down. If it adds value to the information I'll try to include it. For example I found this scan of a Sierra products catalogue online. Which is a wonderful piece of history, with an amusing anecdote about guys at Sierra playing the game late into the night. That one was courtesy of Vintage Computing. I've got a full scan archive of SuperPlay, but that's only SNES coverage. I honestly wouldn't mind paying a guy on RetroMags to just burn me a few archives to DVD. Every website covering classic games would benefit from having a full archive of mags on disc. RetroMags is pretty much one of the greatest websites on the internet and it's a damn shame that they never really got the support they needed. Extremely true. Something like that, making old publications available to the public, deserves government funding or something. It's performing a valuable preservation job. What surprises me is that so many self-made millionaires today are part of the tech industry, and yet you never hear about them donating to ventures like these. Surely they played SNES when they were a kid? They're probably too busy enjoying themselves to care. I can safely say if I woke up with several million in my bank account, I would bank-roll the servers needed to maintain such a site.

Every website covering classic games would benefit from having a full archive of mags on disc. Tell me about it. There's nothing more than I want than easy access to old Famitsu and Gamest issues.

Also, a little off topic here, I presume the "not action" game they mentioned was probably Sorcerian, right?

Looks like there's a pretty large collection of Gamefan issues for $250+$40 shipping (78 issues, including the one you're looking for). Debating jumping on it because I'm curious to check out a lot of those earlier issues.
I recall the magazine being horribly biased and a relatively poor source for any remotely objective information about games, but the layouts really popped out at you and the screenshots looked really nice.
edit - nevermind, auction is ended. Oh well.

I've changed this old thread to something were we can share mag scans (and I can request them for articles). It's also a chance to actually use my Flickr account. Here's a Shadowrun review, for SNES, from SuperPlay magazine: First pageSecond pageAnd Spy FictionAnd Norihiko Hibino (Konami musician) interview pages 1-2 and pages 3-4. If it doesn't work, or you can't access it, let me know. This seems pretty easy, so I could probably do a few requests for anything from SuperPlay, as long as you know the issue number. While I'm here, does anyone have scans of Space Station Silicon Valley coverage? Previews, reviews, stuff like that, from EGM, GamePro, Nintendo Power, or N64 Magazine? It's for a planned feature on HG101.

I was looking up that response from Dave Halverson to the "Jap bastards", and found the blog of a previous EGM editor. I had no idea that Andrew Baran died, and three years ago at that...

"Jap Bastards" articlehere's where I upload my scans toI thought I had some Space Station Silicon Valley stuff scanned in already, but a quick check didn't turn anything up. I'll dig through my collection of magazines and get some stuff scanned in for you this week. Been slacking on finishing scanning in the first issue of PC Gamer. Front cover has a chunk ripped out and while I found an ok quality replacement, I can't find another magazine with the left half of the inside advertisement. If anyone can hook a brother up with a high quality scan of the left side of the two-page Seawolf advertisement from 1994, I'd be super appreciative. FWIW, I like to do a 175lpi descreen with a medium level unsharp mask and low dust removal and backlight correction. For anyone that wants to get a pretty decent scanner on the cheap (and you don't already have an all-in-one printer/copier/whatever), I recommend the Epson V30 (down to $60 since it's been replaced by the V33). The software load is pretty light and has a good assortment of configuration options to meet a variety of needs and demands and the bed size is pretty much perfect for any magazine smaller than Game Informer (it works for Game Informer-sized magazines as well, there's just zero wiggle room). Large size PC boxes take a couple of scans that have to be stitched together (using a third party application), so if that's what you're looking to do then you'll want to find something with a larger bed (the prices on the scanners shoots up pretty quickly). I like to scan in at 300dpi with the above options enabled and then use XnView to do the rotation/cropping of the image (it's also my general purpose image viewer). Doing incremental rotations of varying degrees across dozens of pages in Photoshop or Lightroom is an absolute pain in the ass, whereas XnView keeps it pretty straightforward and simple (ignoring the pretty logical menu layout, you can just press shift+o, rotate by .3% real quick, and crop). The 300dpi scans sit on my hdd in png form and I upload the jpgs scaled to 66% size. Haven't heard too many complaints about them being too small.

Thank you Roushi - any Silicon Valley scans would be most helpful! Some EDGE scans from issue 1. How this magazine made it to issue 2 I have no idea, because when you read this shit, it really is laughable. I've said it countless times across the internet, but EDGE magazine always has and always will be staffed by complete and utter idiots. IDIOTS. Rise of the Robots - because with graphics like this, who needs gameplay? Indeed. Mortal Kombat (SNES) - so, the mediocre fighter which was censored for SNES gets a 6. Nothing too unusual here, except the precedent this sets, because Zombies ate my Neighbors and Gunstar Heroes then also score a 6. Yes, ladies and gentleman, Treasure phenomenal classic is only as good as Acclaim's bloodless brawler. Gunstar Heroes - written by fools! Zombies ate my Neighbours - such a great game, its reputation ruined by EDGE. Yo Jo (Amiga) -- some generic crappy Amiga platformer, described as "not especially clever" scores an 8! Perhaps they were all just blind drunk on gin at the time? I'll have to try to find their Doom review, where they criticised it because you couldn't stop for a cup of tea and a chat with the monsters (true story). By the way, if anyone wants to request a scan of something, please feel free to ask. I'll try to find and upload it, otherwise perhaps someone else might have it.
