Hayao Miyazaki hates just about everything invented after 1935, so he probably disliked video games well before Nausicaa was turned into one. Other games with Nausicca references: Riot (arcade): There's a god-warrior head at the end of the first stage, not far beyond an impaled Robocop. Earnest Evans (Genesis/Sega CD): The China level has an underground cavern straight out of Nausicaa. Alisia Dragoon (Genesis): The bug-fish airship in the third stage is Nausicaa as all hell. Final Fantasy: Chocobos, but everyone noticed this already. Panzer Dragoon: Lots of visual similarities, though that may be due to the influence of Moebius, who also inspired Miyazaki. Galaxian (NES): Not quite the same as the above, but there's a hidden sound test with a tune from Nausicaa. Listen to it here: tcrf.net/Galaxian_%28NES%29As this 1up.com article points out, plenty of games were inspired by Nausicaa's opening credits, which show a made-up human history in carvings and tapestries. Game Arts' Lunar 2 and Givro's Wonder Project J2 are pretty good examples of this imitation, and they're both descendants of the film in a weird way. Game Arts grew out of Gainax, which had in its ranks a bunch of animators from Nausicaa (including Mahiro Maeda, who you'll see in Lunar's credits). And Wonder Project J2's anime director, Umanosuke Iida, was also a Nausicaa animator.

Always figured Mushihime-sama was in some way inspired by the bug world of Nausicaa. I had a screenshot but neglected to add it:  Someone just e-mailed me about these guys in Captain Commando too:

I feel very dumb for not making the connection between chocobos and the birds used in Nausicaa. It makes total sense once you put two and two with the same picture. Here I felt Square were above being caught red handed taking ideas from the movie like all RPG makers. To be fair, Miyazaki had probably already ripped off the real world after seeing pictures of people riding on ostriches.

Bump! I'm actually playing the PC-88 "adventure" for some reason and doing a map of it. I found the glider minigame... kind of. I enter the two-door windmill, and the game shows a new instruction page. And then there is an animation of a tiny hand glider sprite getting bigger. And then the game goes back to the tiny-typefaced instructions from the beggining, and then I'm stripped from my items at the beggining. Guess I died?
I'm not sure if I failed to push a button or I needed to collect all items in the "villages"... anyway, I'll report back with the map and screenies later.
EDIT: I had to use IExplorer to log in... why I'm not able to log in with firefox? Weird.

Got any pics of the glider minigame? I've never seen one apart from the back of the box.

I've managed to access the minigame, sadly it crashes on PC88Win. I can't run at all the game on x88 or m88. Here's what it's shown on 88Win:   Any emulator tips? Ah, and if you want to try, use this map:  You need to grab the owl and go to the one of the two places that have the glider icon. Good luck!

You sir, are a genius (and very patient). Well done on persevering with that terrible game in the name of research! Unbelievable. Excellent work with the map too! As shown in the article, this is the only other visual proof I've found:  Given the shoddy nature of the game, I wouldn't be surprised if it crashes on actual hardware too. We may have to ask at Tokugawa. Which I'm going to do right now!

I made a crappy video, just noticed that it doesn't show the "trenches" that appear for a split second before crashing the game. And no, I'm no genius, I'm just a very curious and bored person.

Both the Prehistoric Isle games have enemies "inspired" by the Ohmu, the second one is particularly blatant:   Anyway this was an extremely interesting read, I had not even idea that these games existed, much less that they were even possible with the technology of the time. (well, excluding the third one that's just a piece of crap) I wonder if Miyazaki hates video games because these Nausicaa titles misrepresented what he was trying to say, or if he just likes being a grumpy old man who likes to hate on everything made after 1950.
