MAZIN SAGA
[title screen screenshot]
if someone we're to approach you on the street
with that hip young slang they speak and ask
"What up yo. What's the best genesis beatemup"
You would probably say "Streets of Rage"
Clearly a missed case.
Mazin Saga (or mazin wars depending on where you live)
Was released in 1993 by [Unknown yet].
Based off of a manga (wich was infact a spinoff of a giant robot anime) Mazin Saga takes place in the future...or the past.
It's really kind of hard to tell with fighting robot dinosaurs one second and then in a prehistoric jungle the next, Mazinsaga
is possibly one of the greater time travelling beatemups on the genesis. While when it was released it really didn't get much coverage it's a fairly noteworthy game. It's set on the standard pseudo-3d plain as other beatemups are up, down, left, right and every other wich way you can possibly alocate yourself.
Getting right to the points. You could hear me ramble on about directions and buttons and things of that persuasion all day.
"How does it play" Right from the get go you know this game will have a steep learning curve. At first you fight standard beatemup fair Kickers and punchers. Okay pretty simple, next thing you fight giant monsters who can kill you almost instantly. Couple that with people jump kicking all around you and you've got an action packed game. Right in the first stage your travel is interrupted by a giant robot foot with triest to stomp you. It's clear weakpoint is it's achilles heel. The game by most stretch isn't easy, It mixes in platforming with beatemups. Jumping overpits all the while dodging energy blasts and punches, the game is no spring chicken on any account. It's only hampered by your apparent lack of moves. You have one or two combos, awesome jumping ability and a "panic" move (Wich uses life but kills every enemy)
Part of the game's prowess is using foresight. Unlike with other "Beatemups" this game has very fluid sprites a kick or punch wont come out of nowhere. An enemy will be animated before doing this wich is where you attack or dodge.
Speaking of graphics the game holds up in a few areas. The sprites (as I mentioned a sentence ago) Are very fluid. Mazin's shoulderpads move with his body, his pieces of armor breath in and out. Every enemy is just as well animated too - No laziness of recolered enemies here either (wich is a plus) The forestages are well detailed. Cracks in pavement and pieces of paper attached to fences and whatnot. It really isn't a streets of rage graphically though.
In terms of music and sound mazin saga is decent. Though lacking
Most of the attack noises for ALL enemies are the same as the main characters. Voice clips are used occasionally for when a foe is knocked down or hit into the air. The music isn't really impressive either. At first it's a bit hummable but they tend to reuse the same music for all but the title screen and a few other levels (Bossfights too)
Mazinsaga isn't really a bad game - It's just lacking in a few areas.
