I got Ranger-X for Christmas last year and the first time I played it I enjoyed it but wasn't really wowed. I picked it up again and my reaction is completely different. I am astounded at how great this game is. I didn't quite get it the first time but now I'm in love with it, it actual has a shot at becoming my number one game of all time. The game play is similar to Bangai-O as you use a jet pack and don't jump, your pack can only be used for a limited period of time. The weapons are pretty standard. You have a traditional unlimited ammo rapid fire attack and many special attacks you collect, but the biggest feature is the alternate ship you control to assist you. You control it by using the the top half of your six-button Genny controller. I found myself speaking to my other unit (which moves on its own often)and sympathizing with it. You can also combine with it for a more powerful unit. The game has so many subtle, clever moments (too many to mention). This game seems to succeed on every level. I feel bad for not playing more of it sooner. Also this is the only game Gau ever did, and this is a company I'd like to know more about.

Destiny of an Emperor I'll be honest, I don't care for most of the "classic" NES RPGs. I can appreciate the original Dragon Warrior, but the sequels don't do much for me. Likewise, I'm not too impressed with the original Final Fantasy. I think a big part of this is the pacing; the games are too slow. You trudge along slowly on huge overworlds fighting slow battles and visiting towns where all the citizens have slow scrolling text. Simple tasks like reviving party members were a big pain in the arse, as well as all the time you have to spend leveling up. I'm probably spoiled though, the first RPG I ever spent any time with was Final Fantasy II (or IV I guess), which is pretty well known for it's ease of play. When I read about Destiny of an Emperor years ago in Nintendo Power, it didn't interest me. Period. The setting resembled one of those Koei games that are too complicated for their own good. Years later as I was going through a stint collecting NES games, I saw this game at Videogame Xchange (a mom and pop used game store) for cheap and thought "Why not?" The fact that Capcom's reassuring label graced the cover of the game helped my purchase immensely. So, I did my ritual of cleaning the game with Q-tips and Windex as I did with all my NES games and fired it up. I was happy to see that it was going to be a fairly traditional Japanese RPG, but one thing immediately struck me: the pace. This game was definitely not slow. The text was fast, the characters blazed around on the worldmap and battles were over quickly and painlessly thanks to a surprisingly good auto battle system. I really dug the "historical fantasy" plot and the game was pretty well translated for an 8-bit RPG. I'll admit that I didn't care for the technique names; I often forgot which technique did what. Even cooler was how you could recruit generals to your side after defeating them in random battles. Kinda like a precursor to Pokemon! Doing anything in the game was just simple; like the Gullwings which get you from town to town quickly or the Smoke Pot which lets you avoid battles. It's not really surprising that I was hooked. DoaE is really an underrated classic in a sea of overrated NES RPGs. You may not care for some things though; battles are quick, but the encounter rate is high and the areas you visit lack variety. However, if I didn't say this game was damn good then I'd be lying to you all. I managed to play the sequel on a ROM some time later. Though still a good game, it doesn't have the same pace and spunk of the original. -Sam Laughlin Oh and here's a picture upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/85/Destiny_of_an_emperor_game.pngThank you Google Image Search.

I have little to no time right now, but in the near future, I'll repost and edit what I said with Shadow of the Beast and include a screenshot to boot.

Are these going to be posted on the actual site?

Yup.
The length is fine, Dale, just clean up the grammar and spelling a bit, just because it'll make it easier. You can edit old posts, so just take care of it from there.
Unless you don't want it put up, that's cool too.

Shadow of the Beast, version two-point-oh!Shadow of the Beast was a game that I did not acknowledge for quite a while. I didn't even recall its appearance on the quiz/video hybrid game show Nick Arcade back in the golden age of Nickelodeon. I was raised on the SNES and was more eager to see kids play Super Ghouls N' Ghosts and Actraiser instead of SotB. Yes, I know what it seemed like, but the first putz to label me a "fanboy" gets a lifetime supply of punches in the face! But that was then, this is now. Today, my love for the Genesis overflows like the well of infinite fluid. I brought games for the thing like crazy, making up all the lost years, disregarding many of the generic ECA sports titles that comprised half of the used games library in just about every store I went to. One game did catch my eye... one that I have heard of before. That would be Shadow of the Beast, which I decided on picking up as it was merely three dollars. It was released as something of a sleeper hit; not very well-known to the public, but a reasonably entertaining game with impressive graphics, unbelievable sound, and simplistic gameplay that anyone can pick up. So why isn't it in the hearts and minds of classic gamers who often shed a wistful tear about games like Shinobi and Strider? Well, the one thing that probably turned the general populace off to its appealing appearance on the surface is the ugly brutality concealed beneath. If you like your games harder than diamonds wrapped in mithril, look no further for a challenge. What starts out as a seemingly simple and straightforward action-platformer with a few faint elements of exploration mixed in turns into a crossfire of paranoia and frustration by the time you get to the castle. Your punches can destroy nearly anything in one hit and you can take twelve hits before dying. That doesn't change the fact that you have to time the attack button at the PRECISE moment that an enemy charges towards you, and the flood of traps will drain your life in a flash of lightning. This is not necessarily a bad game, but only the hard-boiled need apply to this inferno of difficulty. However, it has been proven that the slightly toned down Genesis version is beatable. And if you do beat it, the satisfaction will no doubt wash over your body like Niagara Falls. Rather a pity that you only get one crappy CONGRATULATIONS screen for your troubles, but what can you do? I'll tell ya: Do yourself a favor and DO NOT even go near the Amiga version. It is IMPOSSIBLE. If, however, you can find the Genny copy for cheap (like I did), pickitup and prepare to take the pain.

Hm. I might do something on Pilotwings later. Right now I need to focus on the dozens of other papers that are due for my finals.

When's the cut off for the Reader Roundtable article for May? School's been raping me as of late and I haven't found much time to write any articles.
