Here's one I just found today The other guys look like they also might be tracings. The guy on the left applying the torture rack on his opponent might be tracing of some photo of Lex Luger, since he was most well-known for using that move and the guy on the right strangling the other guy reminds me a bit of Ted Dibiase.

Steven SeAgal is in Kensei Sacred Fist for some reason other charaters look rip off too. Ann looks close to Sarah from Virtua Fighter. Just lacks pony tail. Full roster btw The kung fu master guy reminds me of Chin from KoF too.

@ derboo: Golden Axe III was released in NA. Just not on cartridge, but only via Sega Channel. My guess would be that games on Sega Channel also had some kind of cover pic, similar to how they all do on Virtual Console and other similar services. Probably Vallejo's pic was used on Sega Channel then.

Huh, I didn't notice that. Doesn't look like the channel itself had any cover images with the games, but the art might have been used on the home page. Wikipedia supposedly has a link to the Internet Archive for it, but all I ever get from that is error 500, no matter which date I chose...
Definitely need to correct that release comment, though.

Is it possible the first Dragon Warrior box art is based on the same Frank Frazetta painting that Castlevania/Rastan etc etc. is based on? It's a stretch sure, but it might be possible.

Arabian Magic (guy on the right) and Conan: Joust and Frazetta: Robotron 2084 and Star Wars: To me, none of those look even vaguely similar. Edit: Well, ok, the Joust one at least shares some similarities, but it's still too far a stretch, I'd say.

Also, possible rip off. Could the Double Dragon III Game Boy art also be based on the Flash Gordon still above? These two also don't appear to be similar in any way, except for having two (totally different looking) blond guys with bare arms.

Wow, that was awesome. I've always wondered what the Sega Channel interface has looked like and I thought I'd never be able to see it. The music and the graphical style really take me back.

It would look along these lines: Completely off the main topic, but thanks so much for posting that video! I signed up for Sega Channel in 1997, at which point the various contests were long over since Sega had newer hardware to worry about. It still felt like an active user community that summer though, as they continued posting user letters (mostly via snail mail!) on load screens. Around the August/September area, these all vanished, and the service simply recycled the same four themes and game selections every two weeks until I pulled the plug at the end of the year... They did a lot of cool tricks during the time. My favorite back then was how every theme had at least one hidden game or menu screen accessible by moving the cursor to an invisible area, much like DVD menu Easter eggs years later. It got to the point where I'd start mashing the D-pad looking for the secret stuff before viewing the list of available games!
