As a listener, I'd prefer to hear you guys playing Xanadu. It's been awhile since I played either of them. I can scan some of my Japanese guidebooks if you all need help too. Romancia is ridiculous but it's also pretty short. But, the FC version is somewhat longer. A bit of unreasonable thinking, while still on the lines of "moving into the realm of purely Japanese games"... Maybe some enterprising Japanese readers/speakers could start a series of 'introduction to Japanese' as a subsection/articles for those of us out there that don't live in an area where professional classes are all that accessible. Or possibly just an archive of found WWW resources. Probably wouldn't be enough to actually get someone through a full game or anything, but enough to get the ball rolling, in the event that something completely untouched (like Romancing SaGa 2 or some Tengai Makyou game) suddenly comes up in the rotation. Haha, yeah, right.

Haha, yeah, right. Shouldn't be an issue in this case though. Romancia for the FC has been fan translated and Xanadu has very little text, most of which is English anyway. Getting emulators to work me be troublesome as mentioned earlier though, it depends on the version. The MSX version should be easy to get working, but the original PC88/98 versions might be a bit tougher. Someone could preconfig them though. As for the guidebooks, trying to parsing them should help the community aspect of the thread. It's mostly maps, after all. A series on "Intro to Japanese for Video Games" might be neat. But outside of navigating JRPGs on a very basic levels, my own level of proficiency is quite poor, particularly when it comes to grammar. I'd definitely need someone to help out in that respect.

Looks like Romancia is going to win it I managed to get through it a few years back and wrote my own guide for it, which you kind of have to do just to keep track of all the exact details and their order (and since the guide on gamefaqs outright tells you to use a hex editor to proceed). Needless to say it was a real bitch, but through all that sweat, tears and pulled hair a strange bond was formed. Kind of the same reason I love Hydelide.

I've been meaning to move my language training to the next level for years, trying to use the games I've got as motivation. Not much help though... Anyway, Japanese language materials are a hell of a lot easier to come by than when I first started, so I've got even less an excuse. At least I can read katakana/hiragana (and about 100 kanji). But yeah, I think that would be an excellent idea for a series or a feature here. BTW, Kurt, I always notice "kizu" for the same reason you'd mentioned in an older post (i.e., the box has a "wound" 1cm long). EDIT: BTW, question - we're not using FAQs, but let's say there's a Japanese fan website that has maps or scans of old guidebooks...is that legal? I've come across a lot of that kind of stuff in the past. What say you Xerxes & Snarboo?

Short of genuinely learning the language, the only thing someone really needs to do to get going on Japanese games is Google "katakana chart", memorize the characters, which isn't any harder than learning your ABCs, and then use that to read the huge amount of English written in katakana present in games (since katakana is 9 times out of 10 used to represent English). Trust me, if I can play through something like Wonder Project J without knowing much beyond katakana, then there is a TON of Japanese gaming accessible with a tiny bit of knowledge and the patience for some trial and error.
So when you call read スタート as being "sutaato" and decipher that as "start", you're pretty much set.

Depends on the game though. There's a lot of "usual" words in hiragana (or kanji) that are used regularly that would be useful to know. I'm sure there's guides and stuff out there but it would be a nice addition to this site, and I know for a fact we've got at least two translators here.
But yeah, memorizing katakana and hiragana is pretty easy and fun.

I agree. Would the people who voted for Xanadu be okay with changing it to Faxanadu? Or maybe the challenge (candidate) should be Faxanadu / Xanadu??? I know you didn't ask me, but shouldn't the games up for vote win based on their own merits? I dunno, it doesn't seem fair to swap out one of the two games in a double billing with a more popular one. If Xanadu/Romancia wins, I want it to be because they're games that people feel are worth playing, and not because we sneaked in a more popular game at the last second. In any case, Dr. Chaos is barely leading by one vote, so we'll see what happens come Wednesday.

I'm for keeping the original picks, partly out of the hope that Xanadu is even a hair less painful to play than Faxanadu. I really wanted to like that game, but between the super-slow grinding and losing progress due to bullshit passwords it was like yanking your nuts hairs out by the handfull.

FWIW, I agree with Snarboo. I'd prefer the choices stay unchanged at this rate.
Also, Kurt, you say you'd like us to play Romancia/Xanadu, but I haven't seen the word "vote" at all in your post. Thus, I can't count your choice as it stands unless you make it clear that you want your vote towards Romancia/Xanadu and you intend to play these games as well.

If you really want to find out, you should play along with us and post any hints or tips you have in this thread come December 6th! Edit:Also, Kurt, you say you'd like us to play Romancia/Xanadu, but I haven't seen the word "vote" at all in your post. Thus, I can't count your choice as it stands unless you make it clear that you want your vote towards Romancia/Xanadu and you intend to play these games as well. I'm counting it since Kurt said that he wants (us) to play Xanadu/Romancia, and has offered to scan reference material for us. A vote doesn't require that someone play along with us.

I would definitely say Faxanadu could be played if Xanadu wins but only for bonus points (like WPJ2 last month).

I've been wanting to try Game Club for a while now, and this is a good a time as any.
My vote is for Romancia/Xanadu. I've been playing a lot of PC88 lately, mostly for the Yaksa article (which I'm still a little lost on). This looks like it would be a cool change of pace. PC88 has some pretty cool stuff on it, and I'm hoping these are some of them. Also, I'm inexperienced with Falcom. I've only played the first three Ys by them and that's it.

Dr. Chaos gets my vote, honestly. I've got a little experience with it from a stream, so that's the one I'm the most familiar with.

Speaking of covers, what's up with how the Romancia dude looks just like the hero in Dragon Warrior III: Anyway, my vote is for Dr. Chaos.
