For any Shining series fans, is Shining Force CD the best way to experience the two Gaiden games, or are the Game Gear versions better in some way? The Sega CD version is better in some ways, mostly aesthetic. Also, the first Shining Force Gaiden was never translated into English, anyway. Besides, Shining Force CD has the all-new Book 3, which consists of a shorter series of tougher fights where your characters' stats carry over from Books 1 & 2 (aka the original SFG games). So really, you'd be missing out on a lot if you went the GG route. However, the third Gaiden, Final Conflict, is a Game Gear exclusive, and it is in English, so you should play it, too. It's good. Thank you! I played a bit of SF1 years ago but I'm only now getting into the series. I'm starting with Shining in the Darkness since I really like first person dungeon crawlers. Assuming I stick to the series, are there games worth playing after SFIII? I feel like I only ever heard people bemoaning the state of the franchise after that one but maybe there were some good ones sprinkled in?

The one thing to keep in mind with post-SFIII stuff is that it's "Shining" in name only, and has none of the feel of the older games, but that doesn't mean it's all necessarily bad. Out of those I've played, I rather liked Shining Soul 2 on GBA (but definitely skip the first one) and Shining Force EXA. Neither are essential, and their stories aren't too impressive, but they provide some decent ARPG action. EXA uses gameplay elements from Record of Lodoss War on Dreamcast, which I absolutely do recommend. I'd say Tears seemed really weak to me, but there may be more decent ones. I haven't paid too much attention.
As for the classic series, if you're enjoying Shining in the Darkness, I bet you'll like S. the Holy Ark a lot. I'm not generally a fan of first-person games, but it's really good. I'd say Wisdom is the weakest title, though it's not exactly bad, either. Having to keep pressing the button to accelerate like your character is a car got really annoying, though. Everything else is good.

Shining Soul 2 is pretty legit if you're after a Diablo-esque action RPG; there are some features that will be locked to you without some extra players, though.

Prices starting to really drop dramatically on used Wii Us, so I picked one up. It is a very strange and confusing console. Anyone have any recommendations for Wii U games not ported to the Switch yet? Super Mario 3D World is probably the first one you should get. Super Mario Maker is great too. Game & Wario and Nintendo Land are both pretty cheap I think, but are only great if you have friends to play local multiplayer with. Pikmin 3, Paper Mario: Color Splash and Splatoon are all great too, but who knows how long Splatoon will still be playable. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze did get a Switch port, but it's just as good on Wii U and can be found for like half the price, so as long as you have a Wii U anyway, get it on there.

Regarding the newest Shining games, they seem pretty mixed. Hearts and Blade I hear mostly bad stuff about, Ark and Resonance are apparently decent but hardly great games. Not that any besides Resonance are available in English AFAIK. I think we also got a fighting spinoff on Steam? Mostly selling itself over the fanservice of having the PSP games' characters in the roster, so its localization was a bit strange a decission.

It turns out Super Mario 3d World and Nintendo Land are already on my Wii U, so I'm guessing it originally was the deluxe edition that came with the 2 games.

Yeah, there was a later Deluxe edition that came with them preloaded. The original Deluxe had Nintendo Land as a disc. The really nice thing with the Deluxe was that you got 10% back on eShop purchases for the first two years after release. That was an absolutely amazing deal!
The sad part with the Wii U is that some games have lessened functionality with Miiverse shut down. The biggest is XCX which doesn't have working multiplayer chat, but a lot of games would display Miiverse posts on the loading screens and give special stamps as rewards. Super Mario Maker let you put Dark Souls style comment midlevel which is also gone.

So, I played a bit of Captain Toad, the 3DS version. Seems to be a nice little game but I sadly lost interest after only an hour. Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. There’s really nothing wrong with the game but you kinda feel like you’ve seen everything you needed to see, and your time is better spent elsewhere.

I love this game and completed it on Wii U and Switch. The game is super uniform like many Mario games (you will fight bosses again but with new twists) but the actual puzzles and situations mix it up later half of the game. Some of these bonus challenges in every stage is really hard too, transforms the objectives of some stages.

Where are you seeing a dropped price for Wii Us? Out of curiosity >_> <_< Local video game store around my area started selling them between $60-$100 cdn (depending on condition). Maybe they just wanted to get rid of a bunch of them (they have a lot lying around apparently), but I couldn't resist snapping one up at those prices. I imagine they will start falling to those prices more and more in other places pretty soon as well. Then it will probably become a niche retro console 10 years from now and prices will level out and rise a slightly again.

Has anyone here played Downwell?
It was a charming, fun and pretty addictive game(to me at least) released a few years ago and the guy apparently got a job at Nintendo years ago which was why he wasn't doing anything...until now, where he decided to quit his job and go back to being an indie developer saying he has ideas for games.
Thankfully, he doesn't seem to have anything bad to say about his time on Nintendo, he just wants to make his own games and decide everything and...if they are as good as Downwell i will be pretty happy.

Yeah I like Downwell. Ironically the game is coming really soon to Switch. As long as he makes more games it's a good thing. Kinda wish Nintendo funded him some projects though.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one enraptured by the music from Remix 10 in Super Mario Run. Have you heard this?
It's so rare to hear any kind of callback to Super Mario Land.
