Hey, all. I didn't want to derail the other thread on what to spend 500 points on but I'm really struggling with spending my last 1700 points on the Wii Shop. I want too much! I really want these:
Super EDF Zaxxon Ogre Battle: March of Black Queen Mega Turrican (why was Super Turrican II delisted but 1 and Mega were spared?) Bravoman Super Fantasy Zone Cybernator Psychosis
I can get any two. Part of me wants to just go Mega Turrican and Cybernator (I love run 'n guns but haven't played either of these before. I've never played any Turrican game but they seem great) but I have wanted to get into the Ogre Battle series for a while and it frustrates me that the first game was never put on Wii U VC in the US.
I'm a huge shmup fan but I have all the other rare shmups on Wii VC already. Much to my frustration though I did miss out on some great shmups due to delisting.

I haven't played the other games in your post, but I did play through Mega Turrican last year, and had a lot of fun with it. It's somewhat different from the first two Turricans (mostly in that it doesn't have the multi-directional machine-gun aiming; rather, it's replaced with a somewhat clunky grappling hook), but still pretty fun, and it makes great use of the Genesis audio chip, producing some of the best music the system has ever featured. EDIT: I finally beat another game! I unfortunately can't claim it in the game finish thread though, because I started it in November, lol. Detective PikachuWoo hoo! It was pretty obviously targeted at children, but it was charming enough that I had fun with it, despite not usually being one for adventure/detective/mystery games like this. Most people are probably aware of Detective Pikachu from that trailer for the movie, which has Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. I'm curious to see how the movie turns out, but in the game, Pikachu is instead voiced by Kaiji Tang, who among other characters, voiced Owain in Fire Emblem Awakening/Heroes :3 I didn't even realize it was the same actor until I looked him up, lol; he does a good job of having a gruff, assertive voice for Pikachu, which just feels charming coming out of a cute electric mouse. hehe

So yeah, Uncharted 4 freakin rules, I love this game.
I'm currently at the part where you're driving a jeep around Madagascar and it's just jaw dropping and so much fun.

Finished Shenmue II. It's a great improvement in almost all aspects compared to the first game, with more to see, more to do, better cinematography, more interesting characters, and even the voice acting got a bit better (or it seems that way because there's more talking to A instead of B characters).
It's still very much Shenmue tho. The controls keep being meh, making it unnecessarily hard to focus on a single target in the brawler fights, or balancing on that cliff path towards the end. And while it gives you more to do and you almost always feel like following an important lead on your journey, it still really likes to sidetrack getting to the next important point by putting a couple mandatory distractions right there. Which also makes a lot of the individual setpieces take about 1.5x the amount of time that you would like them to be. Like scaling the gang HQ skyscraper at the end of Kowloon is really intense... but it goes on just short of fucking forever. I also really didn't like the game shoving Yuan at me every opportunity it gets, I never understood the comedy in the okama stereotype that Japan loves so much, and by now am simply super over it.
The fact that by the finale, when any other game would gear up to a consecutively escalating climax, Shenmue II literally turns into a walking simulator for a good 3 hours, where you just follow a single path (or are even auto-walked down at points) while Ryo and Shenhua talk about everything that's of no importance (though I have to admit I already know more about and am more attached to the late arrival character of Shenhua than most other ones that we got sappy goodbyes to in this franchise), and when something is finally happening it just cuts to credits on a cliffhanger... is the most Shenmue thing ever. I stan.
So yea, despite all warts, I actually really enjoyed most of Shenmue II. Don't play the first game, it'll just discourage you, jump into II right away and watch the 15 minute digest video that recaps everything that happens in the first game just fine - because there's really nothing more in there. This franchie might have had a way different life if they could have put in all these chapters into just one game, which is what I can only assume was the original plan, as both early trailers for the first DC game and the previous Saturn project show scenes all throughout what's now Shenmue II and we don't even find out what the title refers to until here.

Dark Souls. I got sick of Anor Londo for now so I went back and did the Catacombs instead. I found that a lot more enjoyable, though I didn't need to see those wheel skeletons again. The boss was super easy for some reason, but when I went on to the Tomb of the Giants, I went down some slope I couldn't go back up and I died because it's too dark to see. So I had no souls to show for that whole area. In fact, all that I got was the rite. I didn't get to level or whatever even once. I still have to go back there to find out what's behind the wall with 'Treasure' on the ground in front of it, and I didn't find out where the sound of a blacksmith came from.
Anyway, I'll probably go back and try the wolf boss next, since I can't go into the Tomb of the Giants since it's dark as shit there.

About seeing in the Tomb of Giants: You need to equip a Skull Lantern in your shield hand. Check your inventory, maybe one dropped already from one of the Necromancers. Otherwise, you should get one quickly into the Tomb after an NPC throws you down a hole.
There's also the Sunlight Maggot, which frees your shield hand since it is a headpiece, but getting it is very obtuse.

Yeah, I saw the Lantern on a loading screen. Checked my inventory while I was in the Tomb but nothing yet. Haven't run into that NPC yet, though. But I'm back from there now, so I'll check the Tomb out once I get the lantern or something else that lights my way.

It's not worth exploring the Tomb before beating Anor Londo anyway.
Beating Anor Londo gives you the ability to warp and unlocks the blocked areas of the game.

Finished off the 100cc portion of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Grand Prix mode. Enjoying the game and liking it better than 7, especially the course selection. Unfortunately, I missed out on a couple stars in previous cups.

Yeah. Catacombs/Tomb, New Anor Londo and deeper into the Demon Ruins are all paths eventually blocked off by a golden wall like at the one at the beginning of Anor Londo, thus going there beforehand is mostly a waste of time.

Has anyone ever noticed the Uncharted series is basically Crash Bandicoot if he were a human in the real world? The first Crash was set in tropical areas, like Uncharted 1, the second Crash was set in tropical and snowy areas, like Uncharted 2 and while the connection gets a lot looser with the third games, Crash 3 did have levels set in Egypt and Uncharted 3 was set mostly in the middle east (Jak 1 was set in tropical and snowy environments and Jak 3 was set in a desert, for more interesting connections) Now giving Drake a jeep to drive around reminds me of when Crash would get a vehicle in the third game (In fact I think even Crash drove a jeep in one of the post Naughty Dog games) It's funny to think of Naughty Dog keeping their vibe (tropical or at least lush environments) alive while updating it for a more adult era of gaming. Even Last of Us, though by far the most mature game they've done, still has lush, overgrown environments and while "dark and gritty" Naughty Dog already went "dark and gritty" with Jak 2 and 3. Plus the fact that Drake actually PLAYS Crash Bandicoot in 4 makes the connection all the more obvious

It looks really cool and I've always heard that the developers really understood the hardware for each respective game and I like seeing examples of retro hardware pushed to the max.

Currently working on OKAGE: Shadow King among other things and I think I'm really bad at RPGs. HLTB has a 28 hour game for the main story but I'm just over 30 hours and I'm only on chapter 4. Things started out fine but around the second or third dungeon the bosses started to ream me constantly so I've been doing some heavy grinding. I'm enjoying myself still but this wasn't what I was expecting at all with this one.

Meanwhile, I’m 12 hours into Dragon Quest XI. This game makes me so very happy, but there are a few things that right now makes it not my favorite DQ ever. (Be prepared to see me mention DQVIII for reference a lot...)
THE LINEARITY Yes, I know this is nothing new in JRPGs and perhaps the game will open up soon (I’m in Gondolia right now), but it’s not just the story that’s forcing you in one direction, the actual world design where I’m at is literally laid out in a straight line.
You enter one region from the right/east, and once you’re done with its town and mandatory dungeon you leave through a gateway in the west. Then it’s pretty much the same for the next region. At least Hotto, Gallopolis and Gondolia are laid out this way. It makes the world feel less like a sprawling fantasy world and more like levels in a video game. I don’t remember DQVIII being this obvious in its design...
THE MUSIC The midi is unfortunate enough but the actual compositions are not especially hot to begin with. The overworld theme is particularly grating. Upbeat like all hell without ever being catchy. It also loops way too quickly so it becomes super grating very quickly. DQXI sounds like a way older game than DQVIII, which was released 14-15 years ago or something. It’s hard for me to swallow...
THE GRAPHICS No complaints here really, but it’s difficult to not compare this to other games, especially Ni No Kuni II which, apart from its overworld, is a much prettier game IMO, at least in terms of art direction. DQXI looks weird sometimes when it both wants to look like HD DQVIII while also having more ”realistic” environments (trees, grass, rocks and so on). It’s an odd mix and not always entirely successful. Still a beautiful game overall, just not perfect.
THE DIFFICULTY So far, this seems like one of the easiest DQs ever which might turn some people off. You can tweak it a little and set ”rules” to possibly make the game a nightmare, so there’s always that I guess. Maybe I’m overlevelled cause all enemies try to escape from me in the field...
So, those were my two cents of this ridiculously old school JRPG. I can’t imagine them ever reinventing the main series. People would probably sue.

I'm playing a bit of Dragon Quest XI at the mo too. I think the "overleveled" part is a general problem. I have the same. If you fight everything you see on your way through those big areas, it seems you level up quicker than expected and stuff starts running away.
Agreed on the music. The fact that many tracks are so horn heavy doesn't help, because those sound especially cheap in midi. It's so grating having the symphonic track play on the title menu and after loading your save you are confronted by the atrocious overworld or town theme.
The game seems also kind of slow to me tbh. It takes just a tad too long to go through those battles for how easy they are and how simple DQs battle system in general is.
Otherwise I really like it tho. Still at the beginning (still only the MC and Snacc in the team), but this feels a lot like playing DQVIII all over again, or at least a heavily by that inspired sequel. Also some really nice QoL improvements like being able to jut fast forward if you can't see the next story scene trigger due to it being the wrong time of day, marking the important NPCs in those large areas for you, or simply asking you on level up if you want to go right to skill distripution.
