Finished Half-Life earlier today. This is definitely a classic in the groundbreaking/influential sense, not the timeless sense. It's a bit of a mixed bag, to say the least.
The game would've been stronger if it had just the human stuff, not the alien stuff. Having the aliens and the armed forced fight to serve as a distraction from you is pretty cool, but other than that, the parts where the army is trying to snuff you out of the complex are a lot more interesting, and it plays off well with the game's strongest aspects: the worldbuilding, attention to detail in the environments and 'realism' (for 1998).
Basically, I had fun one moment and hated the game another. Once you get to the alien world, it's all bad from that point on. There's also a lot of bugs in pretty much every aspect of the game. SFX, music, collision, getting stuck on nothing, weird physics going on with slopes and jumping, not to mention the awful pulling of boxes.

Wasn't Crysis the Half-Life of the late 2000's?

Is the MOTHER 4 fangame ever going to come out at this point? I honestly stopped caring but every now and then there's news of people working on it. Yes and no: Due to legal concerns it's not called Mother 4 anymore but "Coming Soon" instead (which is clearly not the most confusing name ever). Any direct ties to the Mother series will be removed/altered too. Not sure whether it'll still be free or not. If I were them I'd probably try to charge some money for it, tbh. Funny you should mention that, eh? And if you think that's been taking a long time, there's also been news from the Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth project on Facebook. Dates back to 2004, that one! (Did anyone catch the Card Sagas Wars proto?)

Here's a fairly random factoid I saw today, George Lucas wanted to merge LucasArts and Interplay circa 1995 with Brian Fargo running the company! Of course Fargo said no as Interplay was doing fine at the time, but that did not last for much longer. Interplay neared bankruptcy in 1998 which caused them go public. Titus gained near majority control of the company at that time, became majority shareholder in 2002 because of Interplay's continued struggles, and then promptly ran the company into the ground anyway through incompetent management. That 2002 to 2005 period before Titus itself went bankrupt was a really gut-wrenching period as a Fallout fan particularly with the closure of Black Isle in 2003 and the cancellation of Fallout 3 (Van Buren). Of course there's also the sale of Fallout to Bethesda of which I am generally not a fan.
So the question is, what would have happened to Interplay had they merged with LucasArts? Interplay's main problem was being unable to give serious attention to the console market which would have been less of an issue with LucasArts since they had all that Star Wars money. I think some of those later period Interplay games like Fallout and Baldur's Gate probably would have still seen release. I don't know how much inside information Lucas had, but those were already in development at the time although in early stages. Fallout probably wouldn't have had its highest violence settings, but I don't consider that a huge loss.

So it looks like the PS5 is going to be backwards compatible.

So it looks like the PS5 is going to be backwards compatible. Rumor of it being backwards compatible with PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4, as an anniversary thing, is still floating around. I would pay good money for that. It sounds way too good to be true though. It would be such an ultimate thing to own...

I just hope that Sony doesn't remove backwards compatibility when the PS5 gets a more compact remodel/refresh, halfway through the system's lifespan.

People are paying insane money for a premium iPhone EVERY YEAR so I can’t see why it wouldn’t work a Ps5, albeit in a more limited quantity. I would probably pay 800-900 for it if it had complete BC and (as you mentioned) is region free. We’ll see what happens

PSX and PS2 they could probably even do in software although the hardware cost is probably negligible at this point. Main problem is PS3 compatibility as IBM doesn't make the exact model of Cell used in the PS3 anymore. That isn't an insurmountable issue but would likely add a huge cost if something could be arranged due to the low production run. Sony was basically getting the "factory second" Cell processors in the first place with only 7 of 8 working SPEs which likely drove their costs down which says a lot considering how much the PS3 cost at first.

If it did any sort of PS3 emulation (which I doubt at present), I'd expect it would be very similar to the X360 to XBone emulation situation. Sony could upload ported binaries that would work with the original assets (either disc or download). Hardware emulation is extremely unlikely as you say, and software alone probably can't cut it.

The value of both the PS5 and XSX would go up considerably for me if they were backwards compatible with physical discs of all previous Sony/MS consoles (especially if it's region free). But I'm not expecting either to have that. Seeing as I don't have a PS3, PS4, 360 or XBO currently, that would be quite a nice deal for me. PS1, PS2 and OG Xbox would be less interesting as I already have those and I wouldn't want to play those games on a modern TV anyway.
Either way, it's probably the one thing I'm curious about regarding these new consoles.

Yakuza Dead Souls is stuck on PS3 I have a dream that one day (soon) Sega will release Dead Souls, Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan and Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin as a lovely little ”Yakuza Gaiden Remastered Collection” or something like that, in the west. It seems they genuinely care about this series doing well in the west these days, but the spin offs not so much...

Over the past couple of months, I've been trying to get into 90s FPS games, since the mix of exploration, puzzle solving, and combat is something that really appeals to me. As that era of the genre was confined largely to early-mid 90s PC games, that's left me checking out the likes of Powerslave and Radix: Beyond the Void. However, I've been having a pretty difficult time getting into them due to the controls. I know that keyboard and mouse controls are seen by many as the best way to play these kinds of games, but I genuinely can't wrap my head around it and tend to use a controller so I'm not constantly overwhelmed. What I didn't know about FPS games from these times is that they often had the controls working on a single joystick set-up, as it were. Up and down move forward and backwards, but left and right turn in those directions. In order to strafe left and right, you have to hold the ALT key and then press left or right. What this means is that you can't move sideways while turning at the same time, which makes the act of movement feel really stilted. I'm not holding that as a criticism against these games, mind you; that's just how they were designed and likely work fine for someone who goes into them with that experience or understanding. The only issue is that I have no idea how to map the controls to a controller in such a way that I'm able to move around and aim comfortably. I've been using Joy2Key to map things, but the best I can manage is to map the strafe movements from the keyboard to left and right on the left thumbstick while mapping the turns from the mouse to the right thumbstick. (And that's another thing I found out, you could move around and turn with just the mouse if the option was available. It makes certain games less overwhelming, but I'm not a fan - that's my problem, however, and not the game's.) Unfortunately, I'm still left with the problem of only being able to move sideways OR turn due to the inputs, and that's really frustrating since it kills a good chunk of why I enjoy these types of games.
Can anyone recommend a solution for this problem? I would really appreciate it.

Strafing isn't always mapped to just ALT plus an arrow key. Plenty also have it mapped to "," and "." (< and > conceptually). It might not always be mentioned in the manual. I double checked and Doom's doesn't but it does let you use those keys although I tried the 1.1 version and maybe that got patched in. That is basically standard though. If you're going to use a controller, go with a King's Field style setup and put forward/back and turning on the d-pad with strafing on the shoulder buttons.
Also, FPS that don't have mouselook are perfectly playable with just the keyboard. Mouse support is always very tacked on in them. It's perfectly possible to circle strafe and shoot at the same time if you use the dedicated strafe keys.
