Miracles. Freakin' miracles, man. I mean, it only makes sense what with Pixar's next movie being Day of the Dead-themed, but since when do publishers do things because they make sense? ...Of course, it's possible they might botch this up entirely and release a buggy piece of crap with all of the artistry deftly hammered out of it leaving nothing but a genuinely lifeless shell of what once was, but nonetheless – miracles. Double Fine is handling the release, so I guess we can at least expect there will be heart in it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNhE7zxJymEApparently, it was also them who sweet-talked this deal out of Disney, with the help of Sony's cash to pry it loose. Interestingly, there's talk about including some of the fan patches, so this might be a new build of the original code rather than a remake. Makes me wonder whether they (a) somehow have the original assets to re-render the backgrounds or (b) Sony somehow is OK with promoting a 4:3 game with blurry backgrounds for their new gen console. IIRC, we actually had a cheapo-rerelease of Grim Fandango in Germany a few years ago, but I didn't want to play it with the German dub.

The last fifteen years seem to have been very unkind to Mr. Schafer, which is understandable. Apparently the point-and-click mod just came out a few months ago.

Looks like they're making an ongoing making of documentary for this, too: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-LSMCYjHowApparently they got the original assets for the FMV sequences (video isn't specific about the ingame backgrounds, but they got a lot of files from the LucasArts archives) so they can re-render stuff in high resolution. Tim Schafer says he wants to keep the original aspect ratio.

Awesome. It's like seeing a blu ray of a movie you had on VHS for years.

The remastered version can now be preordered on GOG.com. GOG.com's twitter said something about PC exclusive, but I guess that just means the preorder? Can't imagine it not coming out on Steam. In-game backgrounds appear to be low resolution, though.

The Brutal Legend situation still cracks me up. Turns out Activision and EA had the right idea for once!

The Brutal Legend situation still cracks me up. Turns out Activision and EA had the right idea for once! Oh man, Brutal Legend, what a great cast of characters and a beautifully realized world and what crap* gameplay, why in God's name he didn't just make a heavy metal Zelda like it seemed to be at first I'll never understand. Anyway, can you at least use a controller for this new edition of Grim Fandango? I actually attempted to play it once before in 2012 but using my laptop's arrow keys made my hand sore. *maybe crap is a bit harsh, the RTS stuff is "tolerable", but it's just not fun, I could probably never bring myself to replay the whole game but I do still boot up the Steam version from time to time just to drive around it's cool looking world.

It's coming out on PS4 too, so if that version has controller support, it's very likely the PC version would have some too.

Yeah, I was a little harsh - I would definitely describe it as "not good" though. It's a shame, because the rest of the game - the world, the exploring, the characters, the car - all of that was golden. I'm totally with you on the same page about just driving around.

So, word "on the street" confirms that it's not the great remaster they promised; a review I just read even states that it's better to play it in the original 4:3 resolution. More praise, however, is for the fact you can now use screen-relative controls and/or the point-and-click interface.

What did people "on the street" think they promised? One of the very early trailer/making of videos clearly stated it would remain 4:3, and there was never said anything different before that. The 16:9 option in the game just stretches the image to fullscreen, therefore looks like ass.

Yeah, most of the complaints I've seen of "It isn't as great as they promised it would be!" seem to be from people who didn't watch a single trailer for it or thought it was called Grim Fandango Remake, not Grim Fandango Remastered.
Playing it myself, I can say it's a nice remaster, remarkably smooth graphics considering the source. The ability to switch back and forth between the original showcases the improvement hugely.
It does have it's share of technical problems though, which I'm hoping will get fixed some day. The problems vary for many people, but for me personally, cutscenes occasionally stutter and lag, along with some minor problems (I once clipped into the wheelbarrow in the forest while moving it and the bread I was holding became invisible after the bird puzzle).
RUN YOU PIGEONS, ITS ROBERT FROST!
