I guess it reminds me of Tough Turf, another Sega published beat-em-up, which isn't a great game by any means, but the fact that it loads you up with weapons to combat the otherwise crappy mechanics gives a different feel than most other beat-em-ups. Yeah, there is something to be said about a beat 'em up that breaks the mold, intentionally or otherwise. I can respect someone for finding an optimal way of playing DD Crew once they wrapped their head around it, but that does not make it a good game. That said, this discussion reminds me of when I started playing Death & Return of Superman last year. I was surprised to find an interesting beat 'em up hidden underneath a lot of awkward mechanics once I realized the game is built around Superman throwing enemies rather than punching them! His eye beams are also meant to stun opponents, not hurt them, allowing you to close the distance for a powerful throw. It's not unlike DD Crew in that respect. Shame the shmup levels suck. :p

Funny, I remember this exact same argument happening in here before, but for some reason it's gone now, and there's this one now and...geez, I'm confused now. But no. I tried DD Crew a few times and it just doesn't gel with me. I wouldn't mind the idea of only being able to hit one guy at a time if the enemies were not capable of stacking on each other and hitting you all at once. That's just poor balance. Why is it poor balance? If they're all stacked then charge attack, you damage them all at once. Your charge attack is the only attack that can damage multiple grunts. Like i said every move is useful in the given situation. I get bored of this game usually after five minutes. It doesn't do anything noteworthy in my book. Because u don't give it a chance. Did u try playing it like it should be (like the video explains u). It's intentional. Just look how everything is build around that fighting system. Every move in your arsenal, u have to use it. Just like the original Final Fight... not like the many that came afterward and had the megacrush move... but without the same context that Final Fight it get's lost as an oblitatory move inclusion that's lost it's usefellness. And why doesn't that make it a good game? It is a fucking great beat'em up, CROWD CONTROL people, that's what these games are about!!! And people thinking it's a repetitive genre don't play with crowd control in mind... this is how these games are supposed to play and ur enjoying not even half if ur just coin mashing ur way through it. All ur minds are poisoned by shitty console belt scroll titles... Really if people round HG101 really think that games like Final Fight 3 are good examples of the genre then.. there's no saving you.

You're confusing 1cc by necessity rather than by design. You have to use the moves the game has given you because that's the only way to beat it efficiently. That doesn't mean it was designed with that in mind, and that most certainly doesn't elevate it above being a bottom tier brawler. I'm sorry, but DD Crew as an arcade brawler fails. Almost no one would have chosen this slow, clunky brawler over something that is immediately rewarding, either in terms of flash or mechanics. 1cc culture often removes games from the context and climate in which they were released, and while it's fair to reevalaute a game based on its mechanics, when compared against its contemporaries, its a mediocre game. Whether that's fair or not is another discussion entirely, but you are being incredibly naive if you think this game failed because "people didn't get it" and not because it's a rushed, sloppy game. Edit:It should be noted that even some of the weaker arcade brawlers give you a dedicated crowd control move, rather than having you micromanage crowds because of poor design decisions!

I hope the beat-em-up you're working on is more Final Fight 3 than DD Crew, otherwise you'd better prepare for some fairly negative reactions.

I feel that Final Fight 3 is sorely limited by their choice of format. The sprites are very small and strangely colored, the sound is really muffled and limited, the game tends to slow to a crawl for no apparent reason...But move variety is quite good, and they keep up a decent amount of baddies on screen, most times. It's not a bad game, but there are other beat em ups on the platform that just feel smoother, like Batman Returns.

...All right, I'll bite. Why is Final Fight 3 a bad game? Nothing wrong with the super gauge, I mean Denjin Makai series uses power gauges and part 2 is one of my fav. beat'em up out there. Final Fight 3 mostly suffers from SFC/SNES memory limitation, resulting on a low numbers of grunts on screen making it not worthy as it doesn't play like a proper beat'em up, resolving around crowd control. It is really poorly paced to much health for enemy grunts at time (to make of for the low enem count) making progress seem tedious, boss fights are crappily designed and suffer of the Konami beat'em up syndrome (in a Capcom game!) where-in bosses don't have enemy grunts to balance the fights. All ur minds are poisoned by shitty console belt scroll titles... Really if people round HG101 really think that games like Final Fight 3 are good examples of the genre then.. there's no saving you. I hope the beat-em-up you're working on is more Final Fight 3 than DD Crew, otherwise you'd better prepare for some fairly negative reactions. I'm making the game I want to see, that's all I will say. It involves more focus on crowd control, no RPG influences, and a damage cap for juggles (because I think juggele combo's can be fun, especially with 2 players cooperation like the physics in The Gladiator allow u too... but it also destroys the game as in the Mystara games).

A little late for this, but I found reference from one of the developers of what "DD Crew" actually means. In Japanese, it's supposed to be "don don kuru" - "don don" means "quickly" and "kuru" means "come", referring to the quick pace in which enemies flood the screen.
